Is it weird to dress shop alone?

Carm, on January 29, 2016 at 2:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

Weddings in October and I'm just finally able to get the time off to dedicate this week to go wedding shopping. Traditionally it looks like people bring their mothers, MOH, girlfriends etc but I think I would prefer to go at it alone. I don't want to fall in love with a dress then second guess it because someone in my party has an overbearing opinion. Not that I'm easily swayed but is it rude to not invite anyone in my wedding party to help me pick a dress?

I personally found going alone was a lot easier and I was able to make my own choices and feel my own emotions. I went with my mom and dad and that was fine. When I went with three bridesmaids, even though they were all very nice and supportive, I just found it hard to not get swayed by opinions.

I don't think it is rude to not invite them dress shopping. You could ask your mom's opinion if she wanted to come. I know my mom would be a bit put out if she hadn't come with me at least once.

Personally, finding my wedding dress was a moment that I wanted my mom to be there for. But, I don't think it's necessary to invite everyone. I definitely think inviting too many (for some reason) gives people the impression that they can give mean opinions. Maybe if you find a few you like you will want to take 1-2 people back for help on a final decision.

Not at all. I went dress shopping by myself and it was great! It was easier for me to make my own decision without anyone else's opinion.

I say do what feels comfortable for you. You could always invite them to the fitting down the line if you want.

Nah- people process differently- I went the first time with mom and a friend and her mom- then I went alone and bought a dress.

I didn't care- I would have gone by myself- but I didn't want to make my mom feel left out and accidentally slight her by going alone. so- I invited her to go with me the first time. We had a good time. I would have been happy to buy a dress that day if we found the right one.

It is definitely NOT rude to not ask people to go with you. Actually its the exact opposite. It can be rude to expect your bridesmaids to drop everything for you and go dress shopping with you.

However, going with others can be a fun outing...as most bridal shops offer champagne and make it like a "party".

With that said, I went to 2 stores by myself, one reason being I was living in Atlanta and really didn't have anyone to go with. When I visited CA, I went dress shopping there with my mom and a friend...and it was fun. I did feel a little lonely being by myself at the stores in Atlanta, but I also liked that I could make the decision on my own.

I did end up getting a dress at the shop I went to with my mom..

Is it weird to shop alone? Yes and no....is it rude? Absolutely NOT!!

I just went dress shopping today alone. No big deal. It was fast, easy, and stress free

ETA I had my mom on skype the whole time so she could see.

It's not rude, but your mother especially may be disappointed.

I went alone and found my dress. I texted pictures to my bff who lives on the opposite coast because that was the only opinion I cared about. I joked with the sales lady that I had an easier time picking out a wedding dress than finding a dress for my MBA graduation (which is true). It's not rude to want to go alone IMO. For me taking a bunch of people shopping with me would have been too exhausting.

Not rude at all. I was really nervous to bring anyone dress shopping with me, so I only brought three people. But I don't blame you for wanting to go alone! I think it might relieve some of the feelings of stress/pressure.

I think if that's what works for you, then that's what you should do. I had my mom with me because she'll give me her opinion without overriding my own. I didn't want a big group or anyone else. It's a personal thing and you do what works.

Not weird at all, I also went on my own. Are you concerned that your mom might be disappointed?

If she'd be sad not to be there, you could go to an initial appointment with her, and then come for a second appointment just on your own - to the same store if you find dresses you liked, or to another one if you had no luck at first. And make the decision on your own without people there.

Forget rude, I call it smart!

A long time ago I was speaking with a bride that got talked into a dress she liked, but didn't love and went way over her planned budget. She recommended to me that when my day came, just go shopping alone, narrow down a few selections and then show one person if you can't make up your mind. Over time others suggested not showing anyone your dress until the day of.

I say find your dress, and let it be a surprise the day of. If people throw a fit tell them you found it unexpectedly and had to get it that day or you'd loose it or something.

But I think making the dress selection with no one's opinion but your own is very smart. You're the one to wear it, no one else. If you do happen to get stuck making a selection, posting pictures on here can help a lot sometimes Smiley smile

I went alone the first time and tried on every different style of dress that I could find. I had no idea what would look good on me. When I found a couple I liked and styles that suited me, I made an appointment to go with my mom and my aunt. I already had an idea of what looked good on me and that made the appointment with my mom way less stressful. Being prepared always helps.

I was going to look at wedding dresses alone but my sister (MOH) wanted to go with me, thankfully we have similar taste and she loved the dress I love. My mom was in the Philippines. She showed it to my mom and she didn't seem to love it, I mean she says it's nice but still wants to look around but if I still love that dress I should get it. My mom wants that whole mother daughter shopping experience though. I don't want to bring a whole entourage because of all the differing opinions

I don't have sisters, so I'm quite used to shopping alone.

I knew I wanted an antique or vintage dress, so went to a vintage clothing shop. Found a beautiful gown, it fit me, it fit my budget. I bought it and took it to a seamstress (recommended by the shop owner) and had it shortened to tea length for our afternoon garden wedding.
