Is it possible to have a wedding under $10,000 in NJ/NYC?

Is it possible to have a wedding under $10,000 in NJ/NYC/PA? I want to invite 100 people. I really can't justify dropping $30,000 on ONE night when it can go towards a house, etc. If anyone has stories on how they did it, please share! (This is the budget for the whole wedding)

I'm in PA and doing a 130 person wedding for 10k. I've found some really good deals on a venue and catering, I personally know some professionals (videographer and photographer) who offered me some good deals, and in general am just prioritizing what I spend money on. It can be done, but it's not super fancy and involves quite a bit of DIY and creative planning.

ETA: I do agree with PPs, a wedding in NYC can't be done under 10k. My wedding is in south western pa in a very rural area, so the cost of living is much lower.

I'm in rural PA and paid 15k for 70 people, and I did not go over the top on anything. So yeah, location matters, but not that much. I'd still be afraid of what I was getting for $12 pp.

I live in DE.. my original budget for 85 ppl was $12k.. I came close, total cost thus far $16k. There are corners to be cut still but overall I'm not too upset. Both my venues are super inexpensive and unique

In NY or NJ? No way! I'm in NJ and I've been trying to keep our budget less than 20,000 for 95 guests and I'm still going to be closer to 25,000

Yes, I highly recommend putting your family to work, taking advantage of anyone you know who has any type of wedding related skills and then bragging about how cheap you kept your budget. At their expense.

    That's class. For sure.

What is so completely mysterious about making choices? You have 30 people, spend 10 grand on a great party and then have the money for kids or honeymoons or whatever. Or you have 100 people, feed them shitty 12.00 food, thumbed your friends and relatives for favors and congratulation yourself on being frugal, when what you've really been is cheap. What is so confusing about the fact that not everyone can afford everything they want? I just do not get it.

Obviously, I'm in the industry. I have five other officiants I refer. You know how many weddings we've done, gratis, for friends? Three. In ten years. Friends don't make other friends work for free. It's low rent.

I recall my friend saying the Queens botanical gardens had a low rate. I can't say 10k would cut it though.

Why is it that people automatically assume if you are spending $30k+ on a wedding you will have no money after. Its called budgeting and planning. I can spend that amount on a wedding, still afford a house and don't have to eat Kraft macaroni and cheese for the rest of my life.

    Hi there,

I have been able to keep it at around 12K for my wedding of 100 people therefore, IT IS POSSIBLE! But I won't lie it's a lot of work!

I currently live in Texas but my June '17 wedding will be in Jersey.

My wedding is on a Sunday (cheaper day to get married) my venue came out to 8K & that includes sit down dinner, cake, tables & linens & a day of coordinator. We are not paying for the alcohol, we'll have a cash bar, (that alone saved us 2K)

flowers & decorations have come out to less than 1K & the decorator is not charging us for her labor (we got incredibly blessed there!)

i picked a dress that only came out to $400 the groom's tux was less than $200

the DJ is charging us $800 to pay music for the ceremony & reception (& he's including the lighting!)

I emailed A TON of photographers telling them my exact budget & what I wanted & only one replied back agreeing to that. Both photos & videos came out to $2K.

we had to cut our guest list drastically, leaving some family members & friends out but we just could not afford to invite more than 100.

I think that if i lived in NJ it would be cheaper since right now I am doing everything through phone calls & email.

Ask around (friends, family, social media) for recommendations on vendors & almost always there are people who you know that could do the work for a discounted rate. Smiley smile

we had a lot of family tell us that they would help us with the cost at the beginning but unfortunately as it has gotten closer to the day of, they have all backed down due to different financial situations. Therefore, we are paying this completely out of our own pockets.

At the end of the day, it is only one day, you have your whole life ahead of you, pick what works best for you & your hubby & go with it. Be patient & don't be afraid to tell your vendors your budget. Stick to it! You can do it! Smiley smile

Wish you the best! Smiley smile

My friend had a wedding in Philly for 10,000 but that didn't include the photographer! Over 100 guests. It really depends on where, the style, bar all of that! But it can happen!!

Hey Katrina, could you share where you had your wedding and did you have a dj photographer all that jazz?? I'm trying to plan a wedding around 10k and it seems impossible. I'd love some helpful hints. I'm trying every possible venue idea and no matter what I do for 150 guests it's over 15k before I add anything else. Appreciate the help in advance

My sister had her wedding in NJ/NYC for under $2500. Genius concepts that saved them a lot.

Ceremony was at the groom's parents' house- only siblings/partners, and parents (plus my aunt/uncle) were allowed. We all went out to eat at a modestly priced gourmet restaurant (about 15 of us) after in North Jersey.

The reception was at a back bar in midtown, 40 guests, apps/drinks. They had researched bartenders (their usual spot was closed for renovations) and picked it that way. They needed an $1700 minimum, which they didn't spend so late stayers got fancy drinks Smiley tongue . Gave a generous tip at the end of course. Sooooo fun, also food/drinks were incredible. The most awesome thing was that the reception was friends and siblings only, my aunt and uncle tend to be instigators. Anyway, booking a place with a setup like that, where you have a minimum, and maybe don't emphasize wedding, might be possible. Groom wore suit, my sister picked something on sale off the rack I think $100 before discounts. My sister is allergic to flowers, she got some fake blue ones from the dollar store. She just went to her regular hairdresser for hair.

Oh also their friend did photos, he was building his portfolio. They gave him like $250 tip I believe.
