Is it possible to get a dress with less than 5 months to the wedding?

Amanda, on August 16, 2016 at 4:39 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 41

I hate the dress I bought and I don't want to wear it. It's non-returnable and alterations can't fix what I hate about it without redoing the entire dress, so I'm trying to sell it but then I realized even if I do, is it possible to get a wedding dress with less than 5 months to the wedding? What are some designers whose dresses are on the modest side of budgets ($1000 and under)?

All bridal boutiques are different. That's really a question to ask the place that you are buying the dress from. Some places that may be doable and some may not be. Also you may be able to buy a dress right off the rack, just depends on the salon. Good luck!

You can look for a dress off the rack. Call and ask bridal salons if they have any samples you could buy. Or even try department stores (my dress is from Macy's) and ModCloth or JCrew!

I would look at David's Bridal. Also, a lot of bridal boutiques have sample sales where you buy a sample dress that has been used for people trying on dresses and then get it altered from there. As for designers, I know Allure Bridal tends to have dresses in the $1000-$1500 range and they are beautiful!

What do you hate about your dress? Can you post a photo of it?

I bought a dress from DB on Wednesday, paid $25 rush fee to get it hemmed and picked it up on Friday. I just had to find a dress that fit other than the length.

Check BHLDN.com, too. They have a number of options at or under $1,000 and the dresses ship quickly.

You can find an off the rack dress but you may not be happy with those choices either

I went to DB in May, and they all looked at me with horror when I said my wedding was in October. I was rushed into a dress that day (because if I waited, "there's a good chance it won't be in on time!!"). My dress arrived two weeks later. You have time.

Call around. I ordered my dress from davids bridal at the end of July with an estimated delivery date of 11/27 and it came in last Friday.

What do you hate about it? Would it be cheaper/easier to have it fixed than to buy a new dress? I bought my dress off the rack at David's. They told me 1 month for alterations. You could also check bhldn or modcloth, they have some beautiful affordable dresses.

Yes! I am 25 days out from my wedding, had major dress regret, and I bought a new dress (on their floor for only 2 weeks) on Saturday and it was under $1,000! Here is a pic! I would recommend going to a small boutique, not DB.

I second the BHLDN suggestion. I ordered my dress from there in May and had it by mid-June, so I still had plenty of time for alterations.

My dress was in the 1,000-1,500 range, it's a Casablanca. I can't give you much more advice than what others have been saying, try off the rack, but beyond that I wouldn't sell your current dress until you have the one you want to wear the day of.

The dress has several lines of diagonal seaming that goes down the front of the dress on the lace. Unless we remove the lace completely and redo the top layer with new lace (essentially redoing the entire dress, major $$, probably the same as a new dress) it would not be possible to fix that. Additionally, in order for it to be a dress I might like I have to add many things like a back, long sleeves, and covered buttons. It's more than just a belt can fix.

I thought it was unique but was unsure and purchased anyway because I felt pressured and have been questioning the decision since the receipt was signed. I spent the last month and a half trying to convince myself that I like the dress but have been seriously distressed about it the entire time, consumed by stress and sadness. I realized I hated it because I think it makes me look lumpy and I absolutely hate the way it photographs... And I don't want to invest over $4000 in photography/videography for photos I'll never look at/a video I won't want to watch because I hate the way I look/feel in dress so much. I mean it will definitely show that in photos/video that I feel uncomfortable and less than pretty if I feel that way.

I realized the only thing I like about the dress are the neckline and the silhouette, because it was the first true sheath I tried on and the first dress I looked okay in, because every other dress I tried on make me look like fatter and shorter. I really didn't try many gowns on before I said yes. I've gotten compliments on the dress but it really doesn't change the way I feel about it, unfortunately.

Also, I do realize that the dress doesn't matter that much to many people, yes I should be focused on the marriage and my FH instead of such silly things as a dress, but just because I want to feel beautiful and comfortable on my wedding day doesn't mean I also don't value what the day is actually about--us and our marriage!

Alfred Angelo is reasonably priced and they had a selection on the website that are express order dresses.

I ordered my dress from Alfred Angelo in June (which put me at 5 months before my wedding) and they were actually able to give me an ETA on arrival by putting in a mock order into their system. Call around and see what different shops offer for turn around time but you definitely have time.

You definitely have time! We planned our whole wedding in 6 months. I got my dress at David's Bridal in April for my September wedding. It arrived in July, which was plenty of time for alterations.

Yes, but you'll have to buy off the rack- which means samples. You can also look at pre-owned wedding dresses, and consignment stores. I wouldn't sell your dress until you buy a new one.
