Is it okay to take a day off from work for wedding appointments?

Patricia, on April 4, 2016 at 12:09 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 34

I am in the process of getting almost everything squared away will planning but am having a hard time with some appointments being at 6 p.m. or on the weekends. I try to work around my work schedule but its getting difficult. I have yet to take a day off since Istarted my job last February. I have never been late or taken a sick day but I feel guilty if I ask to take a day here or there off to meet with the florist or J.P etc. Did anyone else take days off to get stuff done? I almost asked to leave early last week to bring my FMIL to look at dresses but chickened out and had to rush to pick her up for our appointment.

Um, this hugely depends on your job and your vacation policy.

FH has had to take some time off work to attend wedding appointments with me because we're on opposite work schedules. ETA: His boss is very understanding because FH can work other days to make up for the days he did have to take off.

I'm taking an afternoon off to get a few things done. Sometimes places aren't open after work hours. If you feel bad about taking time off. I'm sure an afternoon off is better than asking for an entire day.

I'm in the same boat! I've never taken a day off of work, but I'm going to have to for some wedding stuff. I'm a teacher and a coach, so I have zero time during the week. Plus, we're getting married about 4 hours away. I'll be taking a day off to go down and meet with the DJ and photographer, and another day to have our final meeting with the venue manager. Oh, and I'm definitely taking a day off to get my braces taken off before my wedding!

Take a personal day. No one needs to know what you are doing. What is your work's policy for requesting time off?

If your vacation days are flexible, do it. It really depends on your workplace though. My office has a policy where if you work on a Saturday, you get a day off during the week, and everyone works 2-3 Saturdays every 3 months. So I stacked my Saturdays to where I could take days off to do wedding appointments, which was great! So I would say that if it is reasonable to work in a vacation day, go for it, but I wouldn't call in sick.

I work in a small law firm and we don't have set sick days. We do get one week vacation. My coworker is often out sick, comes in late and leaves early but that's because she has kids so that's more of a reason. I notices the attorney gets angry about it so I feel scared to even call out sick when I am actually sick. The vendors have been very nice about going around m schedule but even then I have to wait a longer amount of time and usually rush from work. I just want to know if others have taken days off, and if its common

I'm taking PTO on Friday to go to my cake tasting. My boss knows that's the reason, and it's my PTO to use as I need it. I told him I'm going to Philadelphia to eat cake, and he asked me to bring some back for him if I can.

They don't need to know why you're taking a day off. Just take one.

I read an article once that said women are overly concerned about vacation time and always feel the need to explain why they need the time, and will quickly add "if that's okay" and "if it isn't too much trouble..." whereas men are more likely to say "I have something important on Thursday, I'll be putting in for a vacation day." That really resonated with me because I always feel the need to explain why I want a day off. They don't need to know. If you get vacation time it's yours to use as you see fit. Take a day and don't apologize for doing it.

Ahh I see. I wish we had set personal days but we don't. So its all about catching her on a good day I think lol. I will try not to take any days but now I know people do it so I don't feel like a weirdo if I need to. I cant imagine planning from far away. That would be difficult.

My boss told me that my PTO was my time earned to take time off so use it. You don't need to tell them why you are taking time off. Just take a vacation day. Taking a day off to do everything is extremely beneficial from my past experience. You can get so much done with just one day off too.

I just email my bosses when I plan on leaving early/coming in late. As long as I do my work, they don't really care. I'm lucky in that they are very understanding. And I don't take advantage of their trust.

I'm very lucky to work for the state and we have very generous vacation/sick leave policies and they accrue quickly. I took a half day twice to view local venues. I wouldn't think twice about taking time off for wedding related things if they're my days to use as I see fit.

Sadly bc I'm term (1 year) I am not entitled to time off (vacation or sick), so its completely discretionary if I get a day off. At my old job we worked 6 days a week and getting a day off was nearly impossible for me, it sucked so bad. I had to bully a Saturday off for my sisters graduation by blurting "I nedd May 4th off" out in a staff meeting, so that the boss couldn't say no privately. Since I am getting married out of state, I wanted to attend the biggest bridal show in my wedding city, it was on a Monday, I asked my job and they said no. Even now I've only been to my wedding city once since getting engaged, we plan to go this coming weekend though.

I have taken days off but my job is open 7 days a week so she just plans to have me off that day and puts me to work on another. If you're feeling guilty about asking to leave early or asking for time off, try scheduling multiple appts in one day ( not to the point of stressful) and just ask for that one day off

Aee FFW I would be so mad. Being new really stinks, I still feel like I am new hah. I have to learn to just say I need a day off and not say why. Your right it is none of her business.

I only get 2 weeks of PTO a year so I don't like to waste it on random days here and there. Can you just leave a few hours early and make it up another day or take a few hours of pto? If you have to take a whole day I would book as many appointments that day as possible. Most vendors will be willing to meet on evening or weekends if you tell them that's the only time you have available.

If your have enough PTO to take a day off to plan wedding stuff and not put yourself in a bind later with taking PTO for the wedding or honeymoon or anything else you might have planned, go for it.

@AMW. Wow. I feel like that article knows me. FH and I work together and we recently requested time off work. It went JUST like that article. My boss knows FH and knew we were getting married and all, but when I sent the email to request off time it was like tiptoeing around the subject. I almost felt guilty for taking time off for my own wedding.

FH is taking half a day today actually because the last venue we want to look at doesn't do tours after like, 5:30. I think it's okay if you have the days to do so.
