Is bocce ball a good idea for the wedding?

filmhappy, on February 5, 2010 at 1:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I was trying to think of ways to create a fun icebreaker during cocktail hour while everyone waits on me and my FH to take our wedding pictures. He is First generation American and he comes from an Italian family. There's a gorgeous private lawn right out front of the reception hall. I thought we could play bocce ball. You don't need a court - you can do it with just the balls and score cards. What do you think? The best part is, everyone can play! Old, young, in a dress... What do you think?? If you saw bocce ball would you play? It's like the equivalent of playing horseshoes I suppose.

IMO, It is fun but depends on the feel of your wedding. If it is very casual then go for it, but if it is formal some people might not want to participate in their fancy dresses.

Are you doing a cocktail hour?

I think its a great idea as long as it is dry out. The balls can get sloppy otherwise.

Cocktails are all that's needed for an ice breaker. Bocce ball is not necessary.

I think that's a GREAT idea! Do what you want. As long as you're not doing anything that offends or makes others feel uncomfortable, you should have the exact wedding you want. We're not doing everything in a traditional way, and I really don't care if people like it or not. It comes down to this - all people want (other than to see you get married and be happy) is good food, lots of alcohol, and great music. If you've taken care of those three things, everyone will enjoy the day. (I might just steal your bocce ball idea...we're Italian, and I think people would love that!).

It's a casual wedding. Wheat and Honey themed. I was thinking about doing it during cocktail hour while people were waiting for us. Just as an option. With cocktail hours sometimes I feel like people get bored and only socialize with people they know. I want something fun for people to do that is both entertaining to play and fun to watch. Get people laughing with one another.

Yea - if the field is muddy - it's a total no go.

    Thats would be a blast!

we are doing croquet for our madd hatter theme!

if possible i would decorate in some way around the court where they will be playing.

for example we will be putting flowers around the wire loop thingies and wrapping them around the posts as well...forgive me i have no idea what the technical terms are. lol

@Alicia - yea every BBQ or family picnic I've ever been too has had bocce ball haha. So it would be so natural for his family - lol. Plus my family has played a few times too. I was thinking we'd decorate the balls with our theme and create score cards to match.

I think it is a good idea. I am having a casual wedding. We are going to have corn hole games set up. Maybe we will bring some bocce ball too. Good idea.

@ Vanessa - I love the idea of a "natural" court marking. Bocce ball is like field bowling essentially. You only really need the balls to play - but lining out the playing area would probably be a good idea. Maybe some small potted flowers to create the alley or some such. The Wheat and Honey theme will have wild flowers incorporated - so I think that "feildy" feel might just work. BTW - LOVE the Madd Hatter theme with Croquet!!

Being an outdoor venue we offer bocce, croquet, badminton, soccer net w/ ball and frisbee. Depending on the crowd these are used, adults and kids play. We setup in an area a bit away from the party but still close enough to be involved. Some guests like games, like activity other than visiting and its a good photo op.

I think it's a nice idea as long as it isn't muddy or wet outside. I'm doing some outdoor activities for the children and those that want to hangout outside at the reception hall. I have a lot of guests that don't drink and I think they should have something to do during cocktail hour than just standing around, I want people to have fun, it's a wedding after all.

I have no idea what bocce ball is, but if your wedding/reception is casual enough, I'd say go for it. I seriously considered having board games at my reception because both of our extended families love to play games and we're not having dancing.

I think bocce ball would be fantastic for cocktail hour! Everybody can meet/mingle and make conversation around the game. Plus, you can play with a drink in one hand Smiley winking This website sells kits with everything you need to play (even the court), but I don't know if you can customize the colors. It would be cool if you could put like a "wedding logo" or your monogram on the balls.
