Is a videographer worth it?

Jessica, on February 17, 2016 at 2:22 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

I'd LOVE to have one but they're all so expensive (around $2,000 for their most basic package). So to people that had a videographer: was it worth it? To people that didn't: do you wish you had?

I feel like I'll regret if I don't splurge and get one but it's a lot of money to come up with on top of all the other wedding costs. I was thinking about finding a film student or a videographer who's just starting their business and hiring them. I'd pay them of course, but still be able pay a lot less than someone who's more established. Worst case scenario, I use WeddingMix and have a few people (and anyone else who's interested) record things. That would probably work out fine but I can't help but want a professional.

Thoughts?

Yeah. I mean, I'm not even sure how often I would watch the video but it would be such a nice keepsake to look back on and to show our kids (when we have them). At least in theory.

If you can afford one, get one. The day goes by so fast you will want to relive it and you can do that with the video

Me and my fiancé debates about this. This was one of the things I really wanted on my wedding day but he thought it was a waste of money. These are my thoughts. You only get married once ( well hopefully). I would hate to not have one and then regret it later. Plus we have out of town family that is unable to make it to our wedding so we will be able to send them a video. Plus I would love to have it to show my children and grandchildren someday. I think it's your wedding day and you can have whatever you want.

We had the same thoughts, but we are going for it. My friends say they really wish they would've had it at their wedding. One friend says her young nephew cried before she walked down the aisle and was super emotional, and she wishes she could've seen how other people experienced her wedding.

Another friend wrote her ceremony, and later their computer crashed and she lost everything. So she has no record of what she and her husband said to each other that day. They obviously remember the gist of it, but she says she'd love a video to go back and relive it.

We're paying $2k for ours, but we're also both journalists with picky tastes when it comes to the way video is shot & edited. I've seen some in our area charge $5-$8K.

I'm having one! I've read a lot from brides on the topic and it made me really want one! Similar to PPs, the day will fly by! And I thought, well it'd be nice to get to see my BM's and flower girl walk down the aisle! I won't get to see that part live obviously! We just went off of a recommendation though and he was pretty inexpensive. I priced out one guy who's clips looked like a movie with credits and everything but he was sooooo much more. So I decided it was something I wanted but didn't want to break the bank over.

Honestly I would look into finding a college student that does this as a side job and wouldn't charge much...I found a cheap photographer that will do strictly raw video (unedited) for super cheap...I think it's worth getting it to look back at but not worth paying close to $2000.00....reach out to your Facebook friends!

We DID NOT have one and I do not regret it.

I honestly wouldn't have watched it anyways. It's a personal choice really. However, I would say if you are questioning it, I am inclined to think you actually want one on some level. I never thought of it at all, and when our photographer brought it up I wasn't remotely excited about the idea, so I knew it wouldn't have mattered. My husband didn't care either.

We are not having one as I can't justify it in our budget. I think the videos are great, but I highly doubt we'll watch it after the first year. Plus, I hate what I look like on video! I'm all about the pictures

I definitely think so. I'm going to be watching our video over and over. I also want to make it a tradition where every year on our anniversary we watch the video while we open up our anniversary box from the ceremony Smiley smile

KristenS me too. I HATEEE watching myself on video. I would probably watch it once or twice but that's it. I couldn't justify the cost at all.

I never envisioned it in my wedding planning, so I took that as a sign.

I hadn't planned on getting one, but after watching a lot of videos and getting a reference for one locally, I splurged. It was worth every penny! I got the basic package, it was enough for us. I don't like looking at myself either, but he did such an amazing job, I'm ashamed at how many times I've watched our highlight.

DH and I debated on this one for the longest time. We had several of our friends suggest a vendor that they had used and told us it was the best money they had spent on their wedding. Now four months later, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of our full video because I cannot wait to hear and see my husband saying his sweet vows again.

The day goes by so fast and there is so much that neither my husband or I saw. I would say splurging on the videography was worth it. If this is something you can squeeze into your budget, I would say go for it.

We are not having one because it's not in our budget, also. The photography was really important to me, so we're spending a little more there. I don't think I'll regret not having a videographer. Like @Aurelia, I hate watching myself or hearing myself on video! I think I'll just enjoy looking at beautiful pictures years down the road.

We had one and I agree it's worth every penny. The day goes so fast that you miss a lot of thing. It's nice to go back and see all the moments you missed. My favorite part was watching the reaction on DH face when he saw me. I say if it's in your budget go for it.

We are having a videographer at our wedding. I'm a TV editor and FH is in production, so having a video was super important to use. Because we both know how to edit, I am getting a cheaper package and just paying for a videographer day of and then for the raw files to be given to me. I don't recommend going this route though as the editing is what really makes the video.

I do think getting video is worth it. A lot of my married friends say the day goes by so fast, so the video lets them see things they didn't see day of. Also a few years down the road, some of the elderly may not be around anymore, but you will have them on your video and be able to see them having fun. My grandmother passed a few years ago, but she was at my brothers wedding. We have video of her dancing and her giving wishes to the bride and groom. We are all very happy we have it.

Regarding WeddingMix and other sites where they send you cameras, I say don't do it. The cameras they often send are iPod touches which your guests have the equivalent or better quality cameras on their cellphones. So I find the camera rental to be a waste of money with these sites. Also your guests will miss key moments that you will want because they are paying attention to what's happening.

You're best bet is to hire a professional. It really is worth the 2k+ in my opinion. If you can't afford one, see about a student just doing the videography. Their work won't be as good, but they should be able to get the big moments. Then for an anniversary pay a professional to edit the footage.

We originally weren't having one due to budget restraints, but the more I thought about it, the more I knew I'd regret not having one. We found a very reasonable one for about 1200. Our backup plan was going to be to set up a go pro on a tripod to catch things.

Those in our area seem expensive too. IT's a nice idea, but we wouldn't watch it that much, certainly not enough to justify an extra 2k when we already budgeted that much or more for photography.

We are having a videographer even though it wasn't in the original budget. It is important to us that we have one because some of my family on my moms side can't travel to florida for the wedding and we wanted them to be able to see the video of our wedding since they couldn't be there. Also, FH grandparent's are not doing well so if they make it to the wedding we wanted to have something to look back on and remember them and our wedding day. Also, everyone says the day goes by so fast and I thought it would be nice to have a video to watch to see things I may have missed.

Thanks for all your thoughts ladies! I'm definitely leaning toward finding a way to do it. I'll have to convince FH that it's worth it, since he thinks we don't need it. Plus, he's already panicking because of how much we're spending on everything. We can afford what we're doing, he'd just rather put the money toward a house down payment.

@RJmargo Yeah, Wedit is the one that sends you the iPods to record on. I thought about doing that, but it's $500 just to use the cameras. It's another $200 for them to edit it! And yeah, I'm pretty sure most smart phones now take better video quality. So not worth it. Everyone uses their own phone with WeddingMix and it's only $99 but I'm leaning toward just paying extra for the professional.

I REALLY want a videographer, but we spent close to 6k on our photographer. He is AMAZING and I can't justify paying for him AND an extra 3-4k on a videographer. I just keep reminding myself that we chose the photographer we chose because he is so good and will capture amazing pictures and moments for us.
