Is a videographer worth it?

I'd LOVE to have one but they're all so expensive (around $2,000 for their most basic package). So to people that had a videographer: was it worth it? To people that didn't: do you wish you had? I feel like I'll regret if I don't splurge and get one but it's a lot of money to come up with on top of all the other wedding costs. I was thinking about finding a film student or a videographer who's just starting their business and hiring them. I'd pay them of course, but still be able pay a lot less than someone who's more established. Worst case scenario, I use WeddingMix and have a few people (and anyone else who's interested) record things. That would probably work out fine but I can't help but want a professional.

Thoughts?

It's definitely a personal preference. If you're not into the video, definitely spend your money on a good photographer. But if you're on the fence about a video, definitely see about finding the budget for it.

To fit the budget, my recommendation is to find a good cinematographer who can provide fewer services...rather than an inexpensive cinematographer who will provide tons of services at a low price. You'll end up with a little bit of something really good...rather than a lot of something that isn't any good.

I had this exact same debate about a month ago. FH and I didn't think it was worth the splurge initially, especially since we're not big "home video" people, but after seeing other videos and having some family be unable to make the wedding due to health, we decided to go ahead and look into it. I was able to negotiate a package from a videographer whose work I really, really like for $1000. So I would say definitely try to shop around and see if there is someone in your budget who is vetted and whose portfolio you like.
