Is a live band too much for a smaller wedding?

Sarah, on August 2, 2021 at 11:55 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
Like many couples, my fiancé and I postponed our wedding from 2020 to 2021, and our wedding is now less than 2 weeks away. In addition to postponing, we also cut our guest list and have had a few extra declines due to Covid, and there will now be 90 people at our wedding instead of our original list of 140. We booked a band back in 2019 when we thought our wedding would be bigger than it is now. We’re now feeling a bit worried that the band will feel too big for the amount of guests we have. Do any of you have experience with either attending or hosting weddings with a live band when there were fewer than 100 guests? Did people fill the dance floor and did it feel fun, or did it feel a bit lackluster and out of place? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

We are downsizing our 150 person wedding (with a 5 piece band) to 45 people and with no live music because we are substituting our grand reception for an intimate sit down dinner which obviously would be quite out of place to have a live band perform at.

For a wedding with 90 people, so long as your intention is to have dancing, I don't see any reason why a live band would feel out of place. It doesn't matter if you have 90 or 140, if people want to dance, they will Smiley smile

What you do, your guests will follow. So if you and your future husband will be dancing, then most guests will follow your lead and join you on the dance floor. I've never been to a wedding with a live band, but I think it would be cool, even with a smaller crowd. 90 people isn't really that small, either, so I think it'll be just as fun as 140 people.

I think it'll still feel appropriate if your desire is to have people dancing. 90 people is still a decent size wedding!

We had a 50-person local reception and band (5 or 7 people I can’t remember), and it was great! Way more people dance than we expected. We had 40s-60s music. 90 guests will still be great for live music!

I had the same thoughts. We're planning for 100 but it will probably end up at 60. I asked my fiance if he thought it would be awkward for a band (at a dance hall venue, mind you) if only a handful want to dance. He said as long as me and him are there dancing with our crazy friends it will be worth it!
