Is a DJ necessary for a formal, lunch-hour wedding?

BalletShoesRachel, on June 30, 2013 at 6:11 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

So we're doing a pretty formal, white wedding. Fancy plated meal. A nice (hopefully) venue. Only bubbly for alcohol. Etc. We do want some dancing, but mostly classy music. NO club music. I'll probably throw in a waltz or two for my old-fashioned mom, but most of the music won't be THAT old fashioned/formal. Smiley winking We aren't enthused about the price for a DJ, and are wondering if this is even necessary. We will be doing a first dance, and I'd like to do a mother-son/father-daughter dance, but not many "events." I want music that can be fun to dance to--jazzy and so on--for all ages, but I don't want it so loud that people can't sit and chat.

What do you think? Do we need a DJ for this, or can we just ipod it? Is it tacky to ask my master of ceremonies to announce the first dance, parent dance, and cake cutting?

Oh, and if there's no DJ, what do we do about the mic and sound system? Heh.

You could really get anyway with a IPOD system setup. Just give a friend a timeline to announce the special dances and what not.

I don't know where you are located but here are some options.

I wouldn't get a DJ. You can get away with using an iPod.

We went to a Sunday afternoon, lunch reception and they had a very small, upscale band. Mostly guitar and harp. It wasn't loud, very classy and elegant.
