Is a diy photobooth better than no photobooth?

I really wanted to have a photobooth but after adding quite a number of people onto our guest list I'm not sure it's in the budget anymore. I have the idea of making a backdrop to hang up and buying some props and getting a selfie stick to make kind of a diy photobooth but I just don't know if it would come off as too cheap or tacky. Would you like going to a reception having that as opposed to nothing or should I just deal with not having any kind of photobooth? I'm also thinking about the ones from rent my wedding but if I can get away with "making" one then I'd love to save the couple hundred bucks.

I did not read all of these comments, just so everyone knows.

I can not stand the photobooth. I personally think that they are tacky and it is one of the wedding trends that needs to be phased out. I would just not do anything.

I personally would skip it. Photobooths are not necessary and if you can't afford to hire a professional i would just skip it. People tend to ignore the DIY selfie stations. Plus they like a print out of the pics. I don't think anyone would miss it if you skipped.

I actually ended up cutting my photo booth. I feel like they're going out slowly.... they're not cheap, people get a 2 minute quick thrill out of it, then don't know what to do with all the strips of themselves wearing oversized glasses for the next few years.
Oh and they take up space.
And it's one more vendor to feed.

If I had to choose between the DIY photo booth or none at all, I wouldn't have one. That being said, photo booths are EXTREMELY popular where I live and a lot of people have them at their weddings - but I've seen them not get used at all when it's more of a selfie station rather than a true photo booth or big set up where you get print outs. At the end of the day though it is up to you, and you know your crowd better than we do.
