Is 6 months enough time to plan?

Lolerskates84, on February 11, 2016 at 11:44 AM Posted in Planning 0 63

I'm in Chicago and having a reception in the suburbs. The reception venue is available in 8/27/16 but I'm worried I won't have enough time to plan. Right now all I have is a dress. I'm not planning on doing too much DIY (maybe invitations). Will I be rushed and stressed out with that time frame?

A lot of people will say no, But I say you can do it! The only difficulty will be finding available venues and vendors during the popular summer wedding season. But if you can do that, you will be set. Start now!

If you're not DIY-ing, I would contact some florists, DJs, & photographers on their availability. August is prime season- I know that my first choice DJ was booked for my August wedding last June! You can do it, but do some research!

    Edit: 5 star post!! Yahoooooo

I started at the 7th month mark. It is 100% do-able but that does mean the next month (if you're anything like me) is chaotic. I booked every single vendor in 1 month. It took a lot of time and a lot of research but it is so worth it! I'm not ahead of where I should be because I ran on 100 for 2 months.

Just noticed you already found an available venue. I think its totally do-able! Just don't get overly stressed with every tiny little detail. Many of the little extras will be things you won't even notice on the wedding day, or will just forget about or realise they weren't worth stressing over.

I planned a wedding in 2 months! Smiley laugh And it was fab! if I dooooo say so... Smiley winking

I personally couldn't have done it. But part of that was saving/law school. I would echo @FutureMrsKristenS and say that some vendors may not be available. So be flexible.

It'll be more expensive, but definitely do-able.

Totally doable! FH and I got engaged at the end of October and our wedding is the beginning of April.

We have planned ours in 5.5 months. It was a challenge finding a venue though.

You can do it. The hardest problem will be getting the vendors you want, they will probably be booked, esp 6 months out and in August which is a very popular month for weddings.

We planned our wedding in 6 months. We booked the venue in March and got married in September. Get your "single threaded" type vendors booked ASAP - photographer, MUA, officiant, perhaps florist. The bigger caterers can do more than one wedding a weekend, but you should still get them booked. Same with bar service - they can do more than one wedding a weekend.

My suggestions from my experience planning in 6 months ... Skip favors and cutesy Pinterest signage and other stuff you don't need. Pick your top 3 most important things - for us that was caterer, flowers, and photographer. It helps to focus your attention and then the stuff that doesn't matter as much as be on the "if we have time list".

Honestly it wasn't hard at all to plan in 6 months. There was actually a "slack time" about 3 months out when we had all the vendors booked, but weren't ready to do our DIY stuff (seating chart, globe guest book).

How many guests do you anticipate? How big is your wedding party?

It is do-able. My SIL was able to do hers in less and it was beautiful! We had more time for ours, engagement wise (16 months) and we were less stressed than she was but on the other hand, I changed my mind too much with 16 months to overthink it.

All in all, I think you should be fine, just get moving now.

@frugal_gator ... why do you say it will be more expensive? The vendors charge what they charge ... I don't get your comment??

Of course you can do it, but you need to get started now, have a plan and stay organized! It'll probably be a BUSY 6 months though, but at least that might make it go by faster! Also, you'll want to have already had a set budget and you'll likely need alot of those funds available now for deposits, any DIY supplies you might need to start on. I only mention that because alot of people prolong their engagements to give them time to save and increase their budget. With only 6 months to plan (and knowing that some vendors require payment in full a month in advance) you don't have too much time to work with to save. This may not be an issue for you though Smiley smile

I don't get the more expensive thing either. The prices are pretty set. I don't think you really need to cut things out if you are on top of it though. Like i said I am planing mine in 7 months (under 5 months right now) and I have everyone booked and I have decor and am doing a lot of pinterest inspired things. The only vendor that I had an issue booking was the photographer, many were booked but I ended up finding an amazing photographer. There were many that were available but I was very particular with the style and over analyzing their work.

I think you can do it! That's my Wedding day-8/27!. The most important is the venue which we assured last December. After securing the venue, just start doing your vendor hunting!

I personal?y think it could be more expensive because the vendors that are more affordable are swooped up. Not sure if that's what @frugal_gator meant, but I can see that.

I would have to disagree with the more affordable vendors being swooped up. I personally believe you get what you paid for. Just in my situation all the photographers that's work was so/so and were cheaper were totally free and the pricer ones that had great work were booked. I would think the top vendors would book first. Thats why I had such an issue until I finally found mine!

The lower cost, quality venues and vendors will have been booked already, so she'll have to go with more expensive vendors. She also has less time to plan out purchases to get things on sale and such; for example, I got a lot of great deals on Black Friday and have spent a lot of time investigating good prices for things so I know when to buy. All I was getting at is a wedding on the same day, same guest list, same decor, same quality vendors, same "fanciness" will cost more planned 6 months out than it would 1 year out. She can do other things to make up for it though, like getting married on a Sunday at a non-meal time.

Forgot to mention 250-300 guests (yikes)!

I don't need a caterer bc the venue has one in house.

One photographer in mind is available that day, waiting to hear from the other two.

    Not sure about DJ.

Hoping to get Photo, DJ, and florist booked within a month. Does an officiant/priest need to be booked out that far? My cousin is a Make up Artist, I would just have her do my makeup. Anything else to get done the first month?

I think it is doable! Book your vendors ASAP since your selection might be more limited. Since you are near a large city center, you should have lots of vendors still to choose from compared to a small town.
