Is $500 too much for wedding cake for 40 people?

Yes, We were quoted $215 for an 8 in top cake and 70 cupcakes including the delivery fee

If everything on that cake will be edible then that sounds about right. Making sugar decorations is very labor intensive.

I think it's a bit much but if your budget works, go for it.

As a wedding guest I loved when there was extra cake, or if there are different flavors, then having the opportunity to try all the flavors.

Also you could do little boxes/bags for a desserts table that could be used as a favor to-go, eliminating any other favor and shifting the cost there.

If it fits in the budget, I'd go for it. It looks like she does beautiful work and that you'd get a wide variety of desserts. With the variety and large amount of desserts you'd be able to provide for your guests, you could eliminate late night bites or cut down on other foods if you wanted. You could give boxes for people to take food home as favors and kill two birds with one stone (horrible idiom but you get it). This doesn't sound like a ridiculous amount to me though.

I would, because cake is awesome and I fully plan to take our leftovers back to the room and scarf until it goes bad.

Our cake will likely be around $14/slice, and we're going for a 3 tier cake even though we have 30 people.

Wow, that's a lot to me. We have an estimated 20 guests and we're paying $275. None of the bakeries we went to came that close, and they certainly didn't have a minimum! If you're getting all of that other stuff cool, but with 40 people is it all going to be eaten? If you go with cake, cupcakes and a groom's cake that will all be served at the wedding, it seems too much to me. I'd go with the a rehearsal cake, wedding cake, and cupcakes. I would use the cupcakes as favors and get to go boxes for the guests to take them home.

@Punkin I think if I remember correctly you're also a DMV bride?! (I'm about 30mi outside of DC in VA) If so, that seems high compared to the prices I've seen. Ours is $642 for a 4 tier cake that feeds 130 people.

Yes, I'm from Nova. Wedding will be in Charlottesville, so pricy but not NYC prices.

If you have it in the budget, and its something you really want, go for it!

It's too hard to just say have people say, "I paid x for y." There are way too many factors involved. The quote of industry standard being $2-3/slice in a previous comment is a bit low, I think. Maybe for a basic cake, but not for a labor intensive, intricate wedding cake.

Hold crap. Good thing i live in indiana. My two tier cake costs $35.00 and cupcakes are 1.25 each. !!!

Honestly, I think it's worth the money. It was that good. I'm just like "that's a lot of money for dessert!"

I live in NoVA too Punkin Beer. I think I we all have things we want to a pledge on,the our wedding and that is ok. I love desserts and I am the kinda person who isn't like "I just want a small piece of cake". I want lots of cake

I say, splurge.

You're not having a piece of stale cake (that looks beautiful) from the local diner (that still costs you $4.00). Spend three times that amount and allow your guests to enjoy the best cake you've ever had -- not to mention the impressive presentation.

We are paying $750 for 150 guest so I would say yes

I'm in SoCal and it averages about $6-7 per serving. If that includes cost of delivery and set up, that makes it a little better.
