Is $500 too much for wedding cake for 40 people?

So, I went to a bakery this weekend for a cake tasting and it was - no lie - the absolute best cake I've ever had. Since our wedding is in October, we qualify for the busy season minimum of $500. Only thing, we're having just 40 guests so to get to $500 that means we need a wedding cake, cupcakes, and maybe either a dessert for rehearsal or grooms cake. Her work is stunning and the flavors are exquisite, so I really think she can charge what she does. On the other hand, it's $500 for 40 people. That's $12.5 pp. What do you think?

In Seattle I was quoted $6-12 per serving depending on how detailed it was, fondant vs buttercream, etc. Your quote would be pretty standard pricing here if it's extravagant and really good cake.

We ended up going with cupcakes and a small two tier cake for $4 a serving.

Wow that is a lot of money! I'm in central California and I'm paying $500 for a beautiful cake AND 2 sheet cakes. If you think she's worth it then I would say go for it.....

The one thing I hate about attending weddings is the cake never tastes as good as it looks. If you're able to get a DELICIOUS tasting cake AND it's beautiful, do it. You can always have to-go containers for those that want to take some home AND you will probably want some yourself later on (since everyone says you won't have time to eat at your own wedding). My fiance and I are doing a cake tasting this Sunday and I'm so excited! But it'll be about $400 and we will probably only have 40 people (if that) at our wedding. It'll be 3 tiers which include different flavors for each tier, plus delivery fee, and will feed 90+ people. The smaller versions are only 2 tiers but I want 3 tiers. OR I want to get a 3 tiered cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes which are DELICIOUS. I hate paying so much money for a cake that tastes like **** but "looks" pretty. I want both and if you're able to get both, do it girlfriend!

That seems a little pricey. I'm in CO and the most I've been quoted so far is about $8 pp but average seems to be $6

Honestly, I think $500 sounds good if you're also getting cupcakes and other dessert items. We had 35 guests and our cake was $150 for a 2 tier cake that was super tiny lol.
