Is 4 Hrs for a Reception Enough?

MVT83, on December 30, 2014 at 3:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

We're on a budget (like most people). After adding up how much this wedding is going to cost, I'm looking for ways to make some cuts.

Our ceremony is at a church and begins at 2p, which will likely be about an hr ceremony. Though we have yet to finalize any reception details, we were estimating for 5 hrs, including 1 hr for cocktail hr.

Our reception site is $550/hr and if we cut down the rental time by 1 hr, we'll not only save there but also on DJ, photog, catering staffing and the amount of alcohol we'll need to purchase. We anticipate about 80 guests.

My thought process is that we're asking people to spend a large amount of time with us and most will leave after the cake is served anyhow.

What are opinions on a 4hr reception?

Yes indeed! That's about how long mine is too.

Do you mean 4 hours including the cocktail hour? A 4 hour reception is standard but the cocktail hour is seperate. If you mean a cocktail hour and 3 hours of reception time then I think that's fine also. It's your wedding and I think 3 hours is more than enough as long as you have a good timeline

Yes, I am meaning 4 hrs total - whether that be cutting cocktail hr down to a half hr and 3.5 hrs for the remainder of the reception. My sister got married in Sept and most people were gone by 8:30pish, and we'll have a similar guest list... Plus, we have to end our reception by 10p anyway, per venue regulations.

I'm looking for realistic and creative ways to trim this ballooning budget - and we aren't going overboard, this is just the basics....

I'm doing 3.5 hours including "cocktail hour" I know that it'll be cutting pretty close, but it seems like everything will fit in.

    12:30- Guest Eating & Photos [Cocktail-ish hour] (45mins-1hour)

    1:30- Toasts (15mins)

    1:45- Cake cutting (15mins)

    2:00- Special dances (15mins)

    2:15- Dancing (1 ¾ hours)

3:00-bouquet and garter toss (15 mins)

    4:00- Send off

I think 4 hrs for cocktail/reception is fine, especially for an afternoon wedding. You're right, most people won't linger till the very end anyway.

JKR, I like your timeline. My timeline is super tight too. My whole wedding, cocktail hour and reception is 4 hours (2pm - 6pm on a Sunday). I think I need to add 30 minutes on the back end.

My venue cut their event time from 6 hrs to 5. And we are having our ceremony, cocktail hour and reception there between 4:30 - 9:30. They want us out by 10. Hopefully it wont feel rushed, but I have a feeling the evening will fly by. So we are in the same boat.

Thanks FutureMrsDean! FH's cousin had a reception that was longer, but she still had the guests eat while she was taking picks. I really adore the whole village wedding feel (probably because I grew up in a tiny town) but I'm looking forward to the reception even though it'll be pretty short Smiley tongue who knows, maybe we'll all head somewhere and party afterwards.

We were given a 4 hour reception (including cocktail hour) and I chose to increase it to 5 hours. Honestly, I wish I had just left it at 4. It would have been plenty of time. I think you're good.

Yes, I think a four hour reception following an hour long ceremony is absolutely fine. Don't worry about it.

Honestly, if I'd sat through an hour ceremony, I would not stick around for 4 hours of reception-- it's more than enough.

I think a 4 hour reception is very typical (at least where I live!). We are having a standard 4-hour reception, and that includes a cocktail hour.

I wanted longer, but my FH said he had never been to a wedding where it lasted 4 hours (he is a country bumpkin) but ours ends @ 9pm, so I think 4 hours is plenty.

Ours will start at 4pm with ceremony and everything ending at 9pm! I'm working on my timeline now and will probably steal some of Mrs. JKR!!

I certainly think so. That's what we're having (not including cocktail hour).
