Is $200 too much to pay for just my makeup, please help!

stanthewoman2014, on December 10, 2014 at 2:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

I did a consultation with a makeup artist and she did an amazing job, I loved everything about the makeup and her ability to see what I needed for my big day. Unfortunately I think her price is ridiculously high. She is $175 for just my makeup and $24 mileage fee to come to me (the site is 12 miles from her home)... So I did a consultation with someone else and I loved her eye makeup but her contouring and foundation wasn't nearly as good. She, however, charges $260 for myself and my entire wedding party. What should I do??? Keep in mind my wedding is about a month away!

I paid $150 for my make-up, plus a $50 tip. Sounds reasonable, but a little on the higher end of the spectrum. If you loved what she did, it's worth the price.

I would say thanks, the trial was great but you aren't in my budget.

she may offer to come down, but if your foundation wasn't great, you'll sweat it off and be bummed.

did she tell you the pricing before the trial or after? and why such a price difference with the whole bridal party being only $60 more than just you. how big is the bridal party?

the whole things seems wonky. i'd keep hunting for someone whos great and makes budget sense.

My hair and make up was $150 (+ $50 early start fee since they arrived at 6 AM - I had a 10:30 AM ceremony). So for just make up that is pricey, but if the foundation and contouring isn't good then you're going to be disappointed. I had to let my bridal party pay for their own hair and make up (they could choose to do it on their own or get it done) so I could have the person I wanted.

I am glad I spent a little more! I wouldn't risk it personally.

Can you do another trial with the less expensive one and ask her to do the contouring and foundation differently? I did that and was very happy with the result. Let us know Smiley smile

I'm confused, $260 for you and your entire bridal party sounds like a great deal. $175 just for you sounds like a less good deal

$200 just for your make up sounds expensive BUT if its in your budget and you loved how it looked then go for it!

That actually does seem unreasonable to me. I swear my makeup isn't nearly that much.

I dunno I wouldn't pay that but I don't know your budget. I'm highly debating paying $80 lol guess I'm being cheap. I think I'd scrap both and find someone new or go with the less expensive and have a natural look (no contouring).

ETA I think she went to two MUAs the one she loves is $200 for just her the other MUA quoted her $260 for everyone in the bridal party inc. her.

Maybe prices vary by location but here in New York $200 is pretty average for wedding day makeup. I say if it looks way better then it's worth it. You want to look flawless on your wedding day. Those pics will last forever Smiley smile

My MUA is $150 + any tip I give her + the $60 cost of a trial .... IDK I am not real happy about the amount I will be spending but she is the best around!

I've used a make-up artist who charged $100 for each bridesmaid and $150 for the bride (not my wedding, but I hired the girl)... trials were the same cost (not included)... which I know is on the high end for make-up artists but not by a lot and she was AMAZING, so it was 100% worth it.

If you can afford it then go with the one that does the best job... otherwise keep looking.

I priced out 5 makeup artists, and bridal makeup alone was in the $125-$175 range with an additional $50-$100 for the trial, so that sounds about right. The mileage cost is a bit ridiculous, though. All of the artists I talked to traveled within 20 miles free of charge. What part of the country are you in?

How much experience does the person have who is charging you $260 for everyone? That makes a difference. If you didn't like the cheaper artist's work, I wouldn't book her - I think you'll regret it.

That sounds crazy to me. I had my hair and makeup done at my salon for $125 and they give brides a complimentary trial. And I looked amazeballs.

I agree with @Tina BoBina, for the price difference I would let the second once know what you liked and didn't and have her do another to see if she can get it right.

Thank you for all your responses. Just to clarify, I did two consultations with 2 different MUA. The first was $200 for just me which includes the mileage and the second was $260 for everyone in my bridal party. I may try having one more trial with the second one since it possibly could be fixed with tweaking. Maybe the lighting in my house was too bright so it looked like it was my shade when it really wasn't??

I'm paying $275 for hair and makeup. That is with her coming to me at the hotel, and she on the high end in Key West. I think $200 just for makeup is a little steep. I also think that $260 for everyone is a little bit sketchy... sometimes you get what you pay for! What part of the country are you in? That would make a difference with pricing too.

This is one of those things where the difference between "OMG I LOVE IT" and "yeah, it's fine" is probably not very much; maybe 100? (I know that's not a tiny amount, but how many things for your wedding can you pick without making a giant dent in your budget?)

    So go for it.

Jesus. Maybe I got incredibly lucky but no way would I pay $200 for my makeup alone! I had mine done at the salon at the same time as my hair. My makeup was $35 + $15 for eyelashes. And my hair was $60 for a wash, dry, partial updo and inserting my clip-in extensions that my stylist hand-sewed (I bought materials, he didn't charge me to make them). I'm in the City of Pittsburfh so maybe it's a bit more competitive?
