Invite/not invite my direct reports

Lynn, on June 11, 2016 at 9:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I am a manager and have 12 direct reports and work for a fortune 70 company. My team has reported to me for two years already. We are trying to keep the wedding small (50-75). Some of my team, I am close to, others not as much. I feel it's all or nothing. I can't just invite some and not all and if bring a guest, that's 24 people. I doubt all would come, but I would have to extend the invite. Thoughts?

I would agree that it's all or nothing. If you're keeping it small, I'd go with not inviting them.

I wouldn't. Especially since you're looking at a smaller guest list.

No because your wedding size but if you decide to, all or nothing.

Personally you may be closer to some than others but spending 40 or more hours together a week for two years, you've got to know them at least decently well

I eliminated work friends even though I've been here 15 years. We had to leave family off and couldn't justify (to ourselves) work friends when family wasn't invited. Guest list is 72 people with all vendors & BP.

Karen, I know them all but naturally have more in common with some than others. We have occasional happy hours outside of the office but there are a few that are always no shows.

Uh by "reports" do you mean people who report TO YOU?

If you are their direct supervisor I would just not invite them. They may feel coerced to go or feel that they will be somehow punished otherwise. If you only invite some you may open yourself up to accusations of favoritism that may or may not be true. I invited coworkers and my boss but if I was a boss I don't think I would invite anyone, especially if I didn't want to invite them all. I, personally, wouldn't want to have to deal with any repercussions afterward. Like, say one of your supervisees gets sick or injured or something or what if they make an absolute ass of themselves? Even if you are friends outside work, honestly from a managerial standpoint it just sounds like it opens you up to liabilities, both real and perceived. One of my former bosses had everyone or no one parties because you can't do that as a boss, whether a supervisor or an overall boss. It's just one of those things.

Don't invite them. It's a weird dynamic to be invited to your boss's social event (where gifts are expected to be given).

Don't invite them. With the size of your wedding they would be half your guests and what EleanorRigby said.

Don't invite them. I personally hated going or being invited to any co-workers gathering/event, especially when you're supposed to give a gift. I try to avoid it as much as I can.

Thanks for all of your feedback. I feel bad, but I think I'll skip inviting them.

I am in the same boat. I have two direct reports, a supervisor and a co-director. I am on the fence about inviting my direct reports. I don't want to feel like I am being "watched". That being said. we are all close enough that I feel it's an invite all or none situation. Outside of happy hours, I don't hang out with any of the above mentioned people, so I don't feel my wedding should be the first time for that.
