Invitations… who to invite vs announcing the wedding

Erica, on August 2, 2023 at 2:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3
I have a few complicated relationships in my fam and while I don’t want those ppl to come to the ceremony I want to announce the wedding. I’m trying to mend the relationships, but not sure the drama will pause for the day of. But also don’t want the drama of not inviting them.
Is it tacky to not invite but send an announcement in the style of the invites and send them out at the same time? Do I send an invite and hope they don’t show up?!

A wedding announcement would go out after the wedding happened.

Definitely don't do it before that would be a big slap in the face to those you want to mend the relationship with

It's best to send any wedding announcements, holiday card marriage announcements, or social media posts until after the wedding. As a good host, you want all your invited guests to feel welcome to your event. Sending a disingenuous invite or an engagement announcement that could be misconstrued as a Save the Date will result in hard feelings, something you don't want.

Definitely don't invite anyone with the wish that they won't come. That's also asking for trouble.

Honestly, if the situation is tense with these people, I wouldn't do anything at all. If they are rude enough to ask about/for an invite, I would say "we're keeping it small, so can't invite everyone we would have wanted, but love to catch up with you after the wedding!" or something like that.
