Invitations - RSVP cards vs online RSVP, will my guests get the point?

Amanda, on May 30, 2015 at 12:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 23

We are looking to cut costs on invitations and all that goes with them, we're more on the side of casual elegance with a lot of fun. I'd like to just do a basic flat card for the invite, then make our own version of an RSVP card which would just direct our guests back to our wedding website to RSVP online. We would design them ourselves and print at home. Figured this would save in postage too. Has anyone ever enable and used the RSVP option on here? Where have others ordered their invitations from without breaking the bank? Thoughts and opinions on our online RSVP card insert? Ideas for wording?

We did online RSVPS, primarily through our wedding website, and we had 248 of 250 invited guests respond 10 days before the due date. The other two we never heard from...

Of course, the guests also responded in person, through text messaging, regular e-mail, phone calls, etc.; we took them any way we could get them. Between ourselves and our parents, we have contact with most of the invited guests, on a regular basis, so it wasn't surprising.

(BTW, we had a black-tie wedding, in a 5 star venue, and the etiquette police didn't arrest us).

I like the online RSVP and we have already starting receiving responses after sending out the STD's. However, my mother thinks the older generation may have some difficulties. I just ordered my invitations and did a regular response card, but adding to the bottom: you may also RSVP via our Website... I was also trying to cut cost, so I was thinking of only putting stamps on the ones for the older gen. I hope that is not too tacky.lol

I think it's a great idea. We are only doing online RSVP ourselves. It saves money on buying the cards, money on postage, hassle on keeping up with the cards, and more than anything for us was the fact that it forces people to go to the website and we really wanted everyone to see it. We have an FAQ section that we really want people to read and we thought this increased the chances that people would see it and at least if some see it word of mouth should help spread it to those who don't see it first hand. It helped us make this call in that every single person on our guest list is tech savvy. Even all the grand parents have computers and the internet (or on the one that isn't so great she lives with my uncle who makes his living online so he can do the RSVP for her). If we had a bunch of guests who weren't good with computers we might have considered otherwise. Honestly, in that situation I think we might have sent cards to the few who we thought would have trouble and let everyone else do it online.

Do you ladies have a website via wedding wire or another service? Because I don't see an RSVP option to add. I see a "contact us" option. Help!

Crystal I'm not sure what you are saying. Are you saying you did it the way I said?

I'm doing online RSVP, but I have the feeling I may have to hunt people down to reply. No big though, I'd probably have had to do that with paper cards, but probably not as much. :/

My almost 90 year old grandmother uses the internet, on a daily basis. There wasn't a single person that complained about our online RSVPs.

We're doing the online RSVP as well. A few people have already used it and thought it was much easier than mailing a card. We also have a couple people texting or e-mailing us their RSVPs. Like one previous bride said, we'll take them however they come!

We are doing only RSVP online. Our invitation was a simple card with" RSVP at www.weddingwire.com by 1st of August". We have gotten 29 RSVPs already.

We are mainly doing an online rsvp, but we are also sending rsvp cards to a few select people on the family that are not tech savy.

I want to go the online RSVP route to save money on stamps and keep paper costs low (plus save a tree!) Most of the people invited are tech-savvy but I might have a handful of postage stamped RSVPs for those that aren't.

I'm doing online RSVP's and so far I've found them to be really effective. People can do them from their phones even. There's even been times someone has been hanging out with me and said, "Oh! I need to RSVP!" and I'll just help them pull up the website on their phone, and bam, they are done. You will want to identify anyone you think can't handle a computer and make regular response cards for them. I only had 5/110 invitations that went out with response cards.

We did all online RSVPs. We only had a few people from the older generation who don't have computers so either other family members RSVPed for them or we called them directly. It's been really easy to remind people too. We sent out an email reminder last Monday with the link and I just contacted the last three we're waiting on. Deadline is tomorrow so hopefully we won't have stragglers!

We're doing online RSVPs but printing 20 response cards to include in the invites for the non-computer-savvy relatives. Since we designed our own invites (vistaprint.com to print them) it was easy to make response cards that matched to keep the older generation comfortable with it, and we didn't waste the paper/postage for all our friends who never go to a post office anyway.

Wording on the invite: "To RSVP and for more information, please visit our website weddingwire...."

Wording on the response card: "Please RSVP by returning this card or on our website . . . "

I am doing an online RSVP through WW because we have 3 events and having separate RSVP cards for all of them would just be a pain. There are a lot of budget DIY invitation sites available. I will probably use cardsandpockets.com just because I like the pocket envelop design. Just word your RSVP card something along the lines of "Please RSVP by ---- via our website ----." It doesn't need to be fancy. I'm sure if you google wording for RSVP cards there will be more creative wording.

I've just been working on our RSVP online cards, too! We're going with "The favor of your reply is requested by August 30th -- please visit our website to respond and find more details -- www.ournames.com"

I did come across one I really liked, which just said "Please reply online by August 30th at www.ournames.com" -- but since we have so many guests traveling, we wanted to emphasize that there was more info online, as well, which is why we didn't go with this. RSVP means "please reply" in French, so it really bugs me when it says "please RSVP," but I know I'm alone in that lol

Anyone who is too old to RSVP online or just doesn't get it will simply reach out to you or your parents; they're adults, they know how to work around things!
