Invitation Goofs - What Did You Do or Not Do?

I just realized I forgot to put the dress code on my invitations. To compensate I am adding it to my website but gosh darn I don't know how I forgot to do that. What did you do or didn't do that made you say "doh!" after the fact?

I've messed up about 4 envelopes but we did a mail merge, so that was a huge time saver.

It was fate that you "forgot"

I forgot to add the +1 for a couple people, and gave a +1 to a couple more that weren't supposed to get one. Luckily I caught it before putting into the envelopes! I also misspelled a few names, most I caught before mailing them but one went out as a Macey instead of Macy Smiley sad

I misspelled my dad's cousin's wife's name...her name is Jean not Joan. I sent my friend's invite to the wrong person. The invites "requested the honor of your presence" not the "pleasure of your company" and we're not doing a religious ceremony. Somehow I still sleep at night.

Since grown-ups know how to dress themselves, I think the wedding etiquette gods intervened and stopped you!

I have spelled the church's name wrong... ugh.. only my FH and I know and I only caught it when I ordered more of them. We checked, re-checked, and triple checked. So St. Joseph's is written St. Joeseph's on our invites. I am waiting to see if anyone else notices.

I forgot to put the time of the reception & it is not immediately following. There is about a 30-60 minute gap. I went on VistaPrint & whipped up a batch of insert cards with reception info & website info on them.

We ordered too many invitations; we had 182 on our invite list so I ordered 200 (I think?) to "have a few extras just in case." However....we had only about 75 or 80 total households so we had waaaay too many invitations.

It feels weird to throw out our wedding invitations so I'm doing it slowly. I still have a stack of about 50 in a desk drawer.

    5. Don’t dictate dress code to the ceremony. If you want it to be a black-tie event, for example, you can “black tie invited” or “black tie optional” on the reception card.

I ordered invitations last year using a groupon code and forgot to put the date.

Luckily, our style has changed so it wasn't a huge loss.

@Janeen - I get it but let's put the "etiquette" down to personal choice because while some say "Don't" others say "Do". If it comes on an invite I see it more as a guide not an order or a command. :-)

Giving your guests a dress code to adhere to is a very simple way of expressing the type of wedding you are having and conveying how formal or informal it is going to be. Your guests won’t think you are being controlling by including dress code information; they will probably be grateful that you are saving them the embarrassment of turning up underdressed or overdressed, or the trouble of calling you to find out what they should wear.

I think you'll be OK. If someone has a question about what to wear, they will usually ask or look up your venue and make a decision.

Unless it was black tie formal, I have never seen a dress code.

I forgot to put the RSVP date on the invite where I put the RSVP on our website line. I'm ordering business cards in the next few days so people know they have a deadline.

I see some mentioning that they put the wrong time on the invitation but did anyone do that on purpose to make sure the guests showed up on time?

I debated doing that but then thought whatever. My ceremony is starting at a certain time and if you are late you will have to wait to be seated until the wedding planner says you can move about.

Helen, your wedding is 1/21/16 but your RSVPs were already due?

mrsaj2b, I've heard of people intentionally putting the wrong time on the invitation but never seen that done. I would be livid if I were invited to a wedding like that though.

I originally had the wrong date on our invitations... fortunately caught it before they printed!

Yes. I'm getting married in Jamaica and we booked a Charter vacation flight. It has since sold out- which is another problem. But yes, seats were being held for us and then released and many people did not book.

    Smart = neat yet informal

Assume these people are pretentious and dress accordingly.

@Rebecca - Yes. That's another reason why I put the correct time on my invite. I hate waiting around for a wedding to start. I'll give up to 20 minutes because I know things happen and be ok. At 30 minutes I am fidgeting. At 45 minutes I am livid. At 60 minutes I may be gone. LOL
