Intro AND tips for barn weddings???

FutureMrsV, on December 26, 2016 at 6:48 PM Posted in Planning 0 35

Hello! I am recently engaged to my boyfriend of 3 years! I'm obviously new to WW and I'm super excited to start planning. We aren't looking at getting married until Fall of 2018 but I'd like some ideas on a good place to start planning,(maybe with some little things?), and maybe some pros and cons on barn weddings? Thank you!

    Congratulations and welcome!!

Start by establishing your budget then begin with the venue search. Some venues book a year or more in advance, so it's definitely not too early to start looking.

    Happy planning! Smiley smile

Congratulations! Welcome to WW. First things to think about when starting to plan is coming up with a budget and a guest list. With those in mind, then begin to search for venues. It sounds like you want a barn wedding, which is awesome! Figure out with your FH where you would like to get married and the style of wedding you want. I think that's a good start! Again, congratulations and welcome! I suggest lurking on here for a little bit just browsing the threads so you can kind of get a feel for the community and etiquette!

Welcome and congrats Smiley smile I'm a little bias when it comes to barn weddings because I will be getting married at one hahah. but I will say, most are not heated for your fall wedding so you may want to keep that in mind. Depending how far into fall yours will be, you might have to rent heaters so your guests are comfortable Smiley smile

I recommend reading an etiquette book cover to cover, then figuring out a budget and desired guest list that can reasonably be accommodated within said budget.

Congratulations! I'm also getting married in 2018 (August to be exact!). The first thin I did was setup venue tours and book our favorite! That way we had a set date. I've just been looking for great deals before booking!

Thank you everyone! I'm thinking barn because he wants to include his tractor in some pictures, and I'm thinking like a classier rustic theme. Maybe rose gold, light pink and wine colors for fall?? Just things I've been pinning with no real idea of where to start haha

@La Rue I have heard that sometimes renting a barn with nothing included can end up more expensive than a more traditional setting! Seems cheaper when you look at the initial price until you add in all of the things that you need (tables chairs etc)

My barn includes all the tables and chairs....you can find barn venues that do offer more than just the barn! Just need to do a lot of searching

@perfectlypizer how did you find your barn?? I'm finding a lot of smaller family-owned barns in my area are more word of mouth than anything

Our barn is about an hour and 15 minutes from us. If you can't find any locally I suggest Emily's comment. If you are interested in branching out a little further you may end up finding barns with better options! I can't remember what I specifically searched for at the time but I'm pretty sure I just googled "wedding barns near me" type of deal. You can also join wedding groups on Facebook for your area and search around on there. Lots of brides ask about venues or you could even post and ask if anyone recommends any barn venues.

Where are you located? Im also having a barn wedding this may , like others said start with a budget, im in texas i cant point you to a few we checked out if near me lol the barn we rented comes with tables , chairs, heaters, fire pit, hay bails, day of coordinator etc. Our venue is 2 hours from our home , we blocked a hotel for ourselves and guests that's about 15 min away. I actually found my barn on this app under the venue options , we also saw it on a commercial and stalked them online haha

Cons? Allergies. I love horses, and I wish I could walk right up to them and stroke them. If I do, I'm heading for the hospital because the epinephrine inhaler I need to counteract the closing of my bronchial tubes was taken off the market last year. So, unfortunately, I'd have to decline if I even suspected that your barn venue housed even the slightest residue of a horse. I'm also highly allergic to hay -- and if hay were in your venue in the last couple of years, I'd have to decline for the same reason.

However, I'm one person -- and while I know I'm in the minority, I also know I'm not alone. Take that for what it's worth, but for every bride who posts her "barn/farm venue reception", I know I'd immediately decline.

@OP, where are you at? I'd recommend my venue (Buttermilk Falls Inn) if you're in the NY/Hudson Valley area. Their barn hasn't been used as an actual barn in ages and is very modern. In the area it's got one of the more modern interiors, has a great kitchen for the caterer, and I love working with their staff.

@Bee, I'm in Pennsylvania, but that place is GORGEOUS. Of course Texas has beautiful barns

MrsV, what part of PA are you from? There are SO many great barn venues. I would recommend one that no longer runs as an actual farm...AKA no animals...no animal smells...

Check out Jack's Barn in Oxford NJ, Crossed Keys Inn (a barn) in Andover NJ, Waterloo Village in STanhope, Valley Crest Farms in Lebanon (I think), Terhune Orchards in Princeton.

No hay, no burlap, no mason jars.

Contact Judith Guasch, who is here. She is an officiant right outside of Lancaster.

    @FutureMrsV Congrats on your engagement!

You're looking for pros and cons? One con that comes to mind is that barn weddings are extremely trendy. Twenty years from now, you might look back at your photos and be like, ugh. Barns, burlap, mason jars. I think the style will go out as quickly as it came in. OTOH, it might be your kind of thing, I don't know.

For pros, I'd start with, why do you want your wedding in a barn? And go from there.

Ah. I'm on the other side of the state. There are so many great venues out your way. You'll have no problem finding somewhere stunning, as long as you book with plenty of time to spare.
