Inner envelope for invites?

LoLo.P, on February 17, 2016 at 4:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

Is there still supposed to be like an envelope to go in the envelope for invitations? My Mom mentioned it and and all the "how to address them" articles they mention the outside envelope and then the inside envelope, but I just got mine delivered and there's only the main one and then the one that the rsvp's come back to us in. Am I missing something? Do people not do this anymore or do I need to order them again/separate? I used vistaprint.

I love inner envelopes but a lot of people skip them. If you didn't specify them in your order, you probably didn't get them.

Traditionally there is an inner envelope that holds all of the enclosures, with just the names of the invitees on the front of it. Many brides are skipping it these days -- I did.

I had the outer envelope for the mailing address and the inner envelope had exactly who was invited like Mr & Mrs James Smith, Mr James Smith & Guest, Mr. & Mrs. James Smith & ms. daughter smith, etc. I didn't get one question on who was invited because it clearly said. Also if your event is more formal it helps indicate that.

The inner envelope is an antiquated tradition from when postage was hand delivered and the "outer" envelope used to get dirty so it would get thrown away.

Most people now just do an outer envelope with a return envelope for the RSVP.

Inner envelopes are traditional, dictate who exactly is invited, and more formal. It really depends on the style you want for your invitation suite.

Our inner envelop is more of folder. It houses the invitation that's mounted and has a pocket that we're slipping the RSVP in.

Audrey, that's a pocket fold invitation and is a totally different thing. The pocket fold would still go in the inner envelope, get specifically addressed, then it all goes into the outer envelope for mailing. ETA: Spelling

You would need to specify that you want inner envelopes. They aren't automatically included.

I'm doing inner envelopes because, aside from the fact that I love the look, I need to specify who is and is not invited. We're definitely going to have some self-inviters, so I want to be as clear as possible. So on the inner envelope, I will specify which members of the family are invited.

Hmmmm crap. I wonder if I can go back to vistaprint and order just the inner envelopes? So many things I think of too late! :/

@AlmostPrang - do you think you might find envelopes that you could use as "inner envelopes" if you checked local craft stores? Just an idea.

I skipped it! Went with belly bands, I didn't want mine to be super formal

They don't have to be the exact same. I got my envelopes from different places. I used white for the outer and rsvp envelopes and gray for the inner.

I didn't use them. I just made sure to list exactly who was invited on the front.

I did think of that Beau's Babe just to save on shipping for another order. I can't believe I didn't think of it when I ordered the invites :/

@MayBride where did you go for yours? And did you just measure the outer ones and just make sure you got smaller?

Most envelopes come in standard sizes. My RSVP cards are A4, so technically you could go to any store and A4 would be universal. If you change your mind about the envelopes and need them right away, I'm sure Office Depot or a nicer stationary store like Paper Source should have them in stock.

I was able to order envelopes for the rsvp's to be mailed back in, what I need I guess is the bigger envelopes that hold the invite AND the rsvps, that go in the outer mailing envelope.

The envelopes you have are probably the size of inner envelopes. If your invites are 5x7 then the envelopes you have are probably A7 and you want A7.5 for outer envelopes. Paper Source definitely has them. Michaels, A.C. Moore, Staples, etc. might too.

ETA: you definitely don't need inner and outer envelopes though so if you can't find them I wouldn't stress about it

Someone may have already mentioned this - but double check the cost of mailing with or without the inner envelope. It may make a difference. We are skipping inner envelopes.

VistaPrint's envelopes are pretty thin - practically transparent, and that definitely helped me decide to add outer envelopes to ours. I ordered white envelopes from Amazon though, nothing expensive or fancy.
