Inexpensive option to a videographer - My Flip Wedding

Kari, on April 14, 2011 at 9:45 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

I saw this yesterday on OffbeatBride.

http://weddings.storymixmedia.com/offbeat-bride-my-flip-wedding.html

Here's how it works:

Rent one (or more) Flip cameras from them.

Get your friends and family to capture some footage (you know, the kind of footage and only your friends and family can truly get).

Send the cameras back to Storymix Media.

Get back a professionally edited wedding video!

Unfortunatley we do not have the budget for a $1200 (base) videographer bill, so I may consider it. I'm not 100% sold on it yet, and I would be a bit worried about losing the flip cams in a party with 300 guests!

Has anyone out there used this service before?

Thoughts?

It's an interesting alternative. I have to agree about other's losing the flip cams, I'd be too nervous. There are lots of companies that will edit and format standard family videos for you similar to this. No need to rent anything from them, just use what your friends and family already have. I spoke to Well Spun Wedding Films and they said they do this quite often.

@Cyndi- good point! I do not own a video cam myself- but could borrow from friends/family and have a local service put together a video for us.

Another thing to consider is the Flip and similar devices are not good in low light situations. Even most regular consumer video cameras will not do a good job in low light, so you will have very dark and grainy images, unless you the place where you are getting married is very well lit.

I think for a tent or day wedding this would be a great & inexpensive alternative.

    Thanks OP for the idea.

Sorry to add a late response. Thanks for mentioning these concerns; I'll make sure to highlight them in the FAQ on our site. I agree, Flip cameras do struggle in low light, that's why pros use bright lights. That's where it helps to have pro editing. A recent wedding from a coach on the Chicago Bears was filmed in low light. The original footage was pretty rough. But, with a little editing magic, we were able to make it into a wonderful memento.

For those worried about lost or damaged cameras, we don't require any deposit. So far, we've only had one camera lost. If that happens, it's just footage that can't be included.

To be honest, not having a wedding video is one of the biggest regrets from my own wedding - and the main reason for this service. We want to offer wedding video at a price for any budget.

If you want to check out sample videos, like the video guest book from the coach's wedding, it's on our blog today. Testimonials from our happy clients can be found on our site.

If you have raw video from your wedding, there are some great services that will edit it into a pro-quality video. Activid (www.Activid.co) is an online platform where you can upload all your footage, and professional editors will edit that footage into a beautiful 3-4 minute video. They've made some really amazing videos, and it only costs $95. If you don't love it, they refund you the full amount.

Hi Conor, that's a wonderful service that you're offering. At WeddingMix we recently unveiled a brand new package so that guests could use the WeddingMix app to upload photos and videos right from their phone and the bride gets a professionally edited highlight video. All for $99.
