I am hosting two events, one will be a traditional American ceremony and reception and then the night before will be an Indian event with traditional dancing and mehndi (henna). The groom is Indian, don't worry. My question is I had planned on only having an Indian buffet for the Friday event with a large variety of vegetarian and non-veg Indian foods and desserts. I would include things like butter chicken and Tikka masala which I think are pretty accessible. And maybe some chicken fingers for the kids or something. About half the guests will be non-Indian and I'm not sure if some of my extended family will have ever eaten Indian food before? Unclear. Is it acceptable to only offer Indian food? Or do I need to include some basic American options just in case? I'd rather not but don't want to be rude. Thanks for any input!

I'll be there! Lol Indian food is my absolute fave, and I'm a picky eater. Honestly tikka masala is just a tomato cream sauce so I can't understand how people don't like that. I think it's the spice that throws some people off so as others have mentioned, definitely try to have some more mild offerings for people who don't like the strong spices. I also agree with having descriptions for those who are unfamiliar with the offerings.

I love Indian food, and we were considering doing our RD at a local Indian place we love. However, FMIL, FFIL, and both of my parents would not eat it.

Your situation is a little different because it's actually an Indian wedding. Your guests should expect Indian cuisine.

I went to a wedding like this last year and it was amazing. The Indian ceremony had an Indian buffet as you described and no one complained that there weren't any American food options.

I would say ask around your guests. I for one, didn't try any Indian food until the last year. I think some of the idea of it turned me off for some reason. I don't know what was going on, cause I love Asian food, I love curry, I love all kinds of food... and I really like Indian now. Some people who are picky may not want to even try it.

Mmmmm butter chicken and tikka masala.

I don't think this is an issue. As a guest, I would figure there would be some kind of Indian cuisine.

As a caterer we did lots of weddings with two caterers; us and Indian, us and Korean, us and Thai. I think you could go either way, but I also know many people who don't like Indian food. If you're doing a traditional Indian service, it's usually pretty long too, so people who really didn't like the food are kinda outta luck for a long evening.

UO here, but for me a time to try new foods isn't at a wedding. If half of your guest list hasn't had it before, maybe have one simple American option?

Rice pilaf and tandoori chicken have zero spice or sauces. Most Indian buffets have salad. Totally familiar starch, protein, veg. Boom done.

I love Indian food I think you should just serve that... it's delicious and they're coming to your Indian cultural wedding with traditional food. I think it's fine, save yourself the expense.
