Indian food only?

MsFiona, on November 20, 2016 at 9:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 30

I am hosting two events, one will be a traditional American ceremony and reception and then the night before will be an Indian event with traditional dancing and mehndi (henna). The groom is Indian, don't worry. My question is I had planned on only having an Indian buffet for the Friday event with a large variety of vegetarian and non-veg Indian foods and desserts. I would include things like butter chicken and Tikka masala which I think are pretty accessible. And maybe some chicken fingers for the kids or something. About half the guests will be non-Indian and I'm not sure if some of my extended family will have ever eaten Indian food before? Unclear. Is it acceptable to only offer Indian food? Or do I need to include some basic American options just in case? I'd rather not but don't want to be rude. Thanks for any input!

Ive been to an Indian reception, in which half of the guests were not of Indian background. Only Indian food was served, and it wasnt an issue. I just would recommend having a variety in terms of spice/heat. I love Indian food, but have GERD so I have to limit my spiciness intake.

Ok awesome! That's what I thought too but it's been mentioned to me a couple of times so I wanted to run it by a neutral group. I will definitely have a variety of spice levels, too. Thanks!

I'm coming too. I'll pick up Orchids on the way. I'm glad you asked this because I have been mulling around the same idea since we both love Indian food.

I personally don't like Indian food but I think it is perfectly acceptable to serve. I would still eat it.

I think that sounds awesome. I do think there's a lot of Americans who haven't tried Indian food, but all of the typical ingredients (veggies, chicken) are pretty recognizable and liked by most Americans.

Absolutely acceptable to have just Indian food as long as you vary the spice levels. I would think about including more detailed descriptions of the dishes though, and definitely indicate spice level. If people aren't familiar with Indian food just telling them it's tikka masala isn't helpful- try to include a description!

I went to a bday party once with Indian food . I didn't like anything , but I'm not sure if that's because I'm not accustomed to the flavors

I love indian food. I know a lot of people who have never had it, and several who are picky eaters but no one has never not liked something.

I would recommend a clear description and ingredient list posted somewhere cause my one issues is that I love the food at indian buffets but I never know what i'm eating!

I would love an all Indian buffet! Are you going to have servers for the buffet who can explain what everything is to those who are not familiar? Or maybe making a little sign noting what everything is?

I love Indian food and would be thrilled to have it! I recommend having a biryani as well. Even my grandparents will eat Biryani, since it's just rice, meat and veg. It looks like the fried rice at the local Mandarin, so it feels safe to them.

Yes, I was thinking I would have at the least a description of each food (not just the name - I agree, that's not helpful at all) and now I'm going to add the "spice level" too. Thanks guys!

I might be the unpopular opinion in this lol but both FH and I as guests wouldn't be able to eat at your Friday event. I have had issues with digestive disorders in the past and FH has such severe acid reflux he can't have any spice in his food. Plus neither of us is huge on the flavor profiles of Indian food. If you don't want to include an American option (which I support it's your choice) make sure your guests know ahead of time that there will only be Indian options on the menu. Also (and just a thought you may only need if you have guests like us) maybe see if a special spice free plate could be made for guests in similar situations? Just a thought Smiley smile

@always @orchids pick me up with you ladies! Haha. Given that there are two ceremonies, I think just Indian food is fine for the first night.

Personally I love love love Indian food! I think its fine just serving an Indian buffet, the food is versatile so I am sure people will find something they like! Also, it would be an experience for those who have not tried Indian food yet.

I think that would be fine. Maybe consider putting descriptions of the food to help guests who aren't familiar(:

I am the UO on this one. I HATE Indian food.. so if I didn't know ahead of time that it would be only Indian food there.. I would be leaving early to go get something to eat.

However, if you warn your guests for those like me who don't like it, and have a variety of spice levels... I think you would be fine with an all Indian buffet

If I was going to an Indian wedding or event I would assume it's going to be Indian food. So I don't know that it's necessary to "warn people". I think having a description of the dishes would be helpful, I like to know exactly what I'm eating.
