Including future niece/nephews in the wedding

Stephanie, on July 3, 2017 at 12:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

My fiance only has one sibling, and she has 4 kids: two daughters (11 and 1), and two sons (9 and 8). The kids weren't around when their other uncle got married, so this would be their only chance to participate in a wedding and we would really like to include them somehow.

I'm not a fan of flower girls, ring bearers, or those cutesy signs ("last chance to run!" "Here comes the bride" etc.) though. We also aren't having a very formal ceremony, so no programs, ushers, etc. Is there anything else 8, 9, and 11 year olds can do during a wedding ceremony to feel included?

They could be pages and simply walk up the aisle.

Instead of doing a flower girl, we are having my FH niece (12 years old) walk down blowing bubbles.. And we're having my 10 and 8 year old cousins help hold my dress train as I walk down, but that's cause its a 10 food train!

The kids will be thrilled to attend the wedding. There is no need to invent a role for them.

We're having our two dogs in the ceremony too! I would let the kids walk with them, but one of our dogs can be a handful, so we're letting my brother/Man of Honor/groomsman do that task.

My initial thought was something like that, just walking down and looking cute, but I wasn't sure what to call it when we talk to my FSIL about it. I imagined the two boys walking on either side of the 11-year old (I'm sure the baby will be my FSIL), but I hadn't gotten any further than that.

My niece and nephew are ring bearer and flower girl, but we're not doing the sign stuff cause FH and I both think that's horrible 'humor'. My niece is throwing petals and her brother is walking down with an empty box that looks like a ring box. You could always make the older kids junior bridesmaids/groomsmen and then the other two just walk down with just a bouquet, together. I like the idea of them blowing bubbles too!
