How did your in-laws react to your engagements? How involved are they in your wedding plans? Excited? Angry? Neutral? Distant?

My FMIL started crying because she was so excited for us, and my FFIL was just as excited. My FMIL is saving stuff for center pieces. But otherwise I haven't needed help with anything yet, she has extended the offer to help when I do need it.

Both my in laws and my parents were excited when we got engaged. As we started planning my FH dad and stepmother got less excited as we decided to do an inmate wedding with only parents and siblings. We thought about throwing a party in a Chicago (where most of our extended family lives) but we decided against that when FHs dad and stepmom were treating that like it was our wedding and treating our wedding as if it was nothing. When we told them we aren’t doing a party in a Chicago FHs dad told us we were choosing to do our wedding the wrong way. But it is what it is. We are doing our wedding the way we want to.

My in-laws weren't too excited when we first got engaged (I was only 20 and my now-husband was only 22 ) but got more and more excited and used to the idea as time passed. By the time we got married this passed june ( at 22 and 24), everyone was super happy for us!

My future in laws were so excited! It was hard to tell who was more excited me or them! My fiancé and I have been dating for 8 years and (his mom especially) thought it was long overdue that I get that ring lol. My fiancé told me the night he proposed he had asked to borrow his moms car for the night (we had a run down beaten up truck) she was like um okay sure why tho? And he told her oh no big deal I was going to propose to Steph tonight and she jumped up out of bed and was like I swear to god you better not be kidding! And then his dad was sleeping and he woke him up to tell him. His dad was cranky being woken up(I work until 11pm so he was long sleeping since then) and so my fiancé told him don’t be a grumpy gills I’m going to ask her to marry me tonight. And his dad jumped up and said omg I have to go see this lol.

Oh and my FMIL is a principal at a charter school so she has a lot of connections with parents in fields that will be useful for the wedding! So that’ll be a big help for sure with finding people to help put it together!! She’s also been very eager and helpful with my planning/searching for wedding details. I get anxiety very easily so having her help is a big deal

My mom: "You don't even want kids so what's the point?"

My dad: "...oh. Wow. Congratulations, but...wow."

His mom: "YAAAAAY!!!" (I love this woman)

    His dad: "Is she pregnant???"

We had been dating for 3 years and living together for 1 1/2, but were both still young and in college. We ended up with full support after our parents learned we would have a 2 year engagement. Mine like him and his like me, so it's all good in the end even if initial reactions weren't quite what we were hoping for!

We texted a picture to everyone to tell them so that they all got it at the same time (FS's parents are divorced and very competitive about who gets told things first) and because they never answer their phones anyway if FS calls but answer texts quickly. FMIL called us crying she was so excited and FFIL texted back that we looked really nice but that was it. He had been much less enthusiastic about us dating to begin with (we are LGBT) so we just let it go, glad that it wasnt a negative. Then at Christmas (2 months later!) we carefully broached the topic to show him my ring in person and he flipped out super excited, "When did this happen? When will the wedding be? Why didnt you say anything sooner?" We told him that we had texted him that day and he told us that he thought we looked good in the picture. He said he would have remembered went back to his phone scrolled back to that set of texts and was like, no nothing, its not here this is the only picture that day. We told him yes that one read the sign we are holding. He said, "What sign?" got his reading glasses that he swears he doesnt need and then read the sign. So the second time we told him he actually saw it and was super excited - and finally admitted that maybe he might need his readers a little bit.

My parents were also excited but more worried about the logistics since we are both female. Dad got over it pretty quickly and mom did when I included her in planning stuff like my dress alterations (Dad's mom's gown) and venue and invite ideas, etc - she also started offering to pay for more and more of it just handing me checks to put towards items we had decided on that she liked or buying things she found that matched our inspiration photos then telling me she found them.

We have been dating for 5 years and getting married was always talked about. When I got engaged in April, I wanted to set the date on our 6 year anniversary which how often does that happen?! But my mother in law freaked and thought it was too soon.. this cause my FH to freak and follow her lead. So we pushed it to May only to move it to March.. needless to say now that the planning has started she’s excited for us.
