Illegal Exit!!

Mrs. BG, on February 15, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Posted in Etiquette and Advice 34

So, I just found out that it is illegal to use lanterns in NJ!!! I had planned to release lanterns for our exit at the reception, but now that has been dismissed. Anybody have any neat exits in mind? I want to stay away from the traditional rice throwing. All ideas are welcomed. Thanks!

Sparklers are nice, but you will have to cross a border to buy them, since they are not sold in NJ. I don't understand the lantern thing though. Sounds weird, and I am a Jersey girl since birth! What about using battery operated candles in them?

I can't do sparklers or lanterns due to the wooded area in a residential area. So I'm Watching this thread for ideas also :-)

Thanks everyone for your help! The lanterns are definitely out (unfortunately). The ordinance states it's because they have been known to land on houses, trees and other fire hazardous places/items. I'm finding, so far, that balloons aren't illegal but it's being suggested to release them without the ribbon. It reads that it's the ribbons that tend to get caught up in power lines and are threatening to animals. IF we use balloons, there won't be a stick inside. They make glow balloons. But just like I don't want to worry about cleaning up confetti of any sort, I don't want to contribute to potentially killing anyone or anything so balloons are out too! I've seen the sparklers and the pictures are nice, but I fear the hazards with that because I'm almost certain that a few parents will judge their kids level of responsibility incorrectly and, God forbid, something happens! Or, I thought about putting them in a container with a sign and time so guests will know, but I risk someone talking then and starting early and something potentially happening! So... At THIS point, glow sticks are taking the lead. I still have time to search and research, so I'll keep you all posted.

You can do sparklers in NJ. I live in Jersey and have seen them at quite a few weddings. Some venues might have a thing against them, though. I know my venue won't allow an open flames other than candles for centerpieces.

My brother and SIL had bags of lavender petals people threw--that made for some nice pictures and wasn't at all environmentally harmful.

I don't want to do a traditional exit (bubbles or bird seed) so I'm thinking we are just going to skip it.

@wildflower, yes, I've seen pictures of that too and looked really pretty!

@Rosemary, yes, I agree. I know that fireworks of any kind are illegal to have here in Jersey. Takes away from some events, but fortunately, there are other ways to still capture moments. I'm really leaning towards the glow sticks, not only is it safe but I don't have to worry about cops all evening!!

I do like the idea of going the full nature route such as the lavender. I think that too could fit in since I'm having a rustic theme. The only thing is my wedding starts at 4p, with the cocktail hour from 5-6. So by the time we exit, it'll be around 9ish. Will lavender be captured on camera/film?

@tucker, my dilemma too! I want to stray away from traditions and the expected. I don't have a lot of tradition in my wedding so I'm doing well with this so far.

For real people-- instead of using your experience of seeing sparklers used to determine their legal status, look at the effing laws. They are unconditionally illegal-- for sale, for purchase AND for use!

OKAAAAY enough about the LAW that's NOT what this post was intended for sheesh. Make suggestions! Anyway OP have you seen picture with "color bombs" in them? Those are pretty cool. Maybe have one go off before you exit either by the car but not too close to the car or hold them as you exit. I don't know how they work though and if it will get stuff on people's clothing or your clothing for that matter lol

Wow, so sorry! Just made mention that I have seen venues use sparklers in NJ....indoor and outdoor. I figured since the VENUE was the one providing it that is was legal. Damn...

Jersey bride here too. Check with your venue before deciding on sparklers, many of them (like mine) don't allow them because they're a fire hazard.

BTW, I don't think sparklers are illegal in NJ -- regular fireworks are.

Ooooh just kidding, they are lol http://bestofnj.com/new-jersey-fireworks-laws

Kids in my neighborhood set them off ALL THE TIME in the summer and no one does anything about it ha. Anyway, I always thought the bubbles were cute. An old co-worker of mine also did the butterflies thing, but I think she ended up with a lot of dead ones :-/
