Illegal Exit!!

Mrs. BG, on February 15, 2015 at 9:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 34

So, I just found out that it is illegal to use lanterns in NJ!!! I had planned to release lanterns for our exit at the reception, but now that has been dismissed.

Anybody have any neat exits in mind? I want to stay away from the traditional rice throwing. All ideas are welcomed.

Thanks!

Sparklers? Your wedding is right after the fourth, so you could get huge discounts on them Smiley smile

We're just doing bubbles. didn't wanna make a mess with confetti or anything.

i was really bummed because i've always wanted a sparkler exit, but fireworks are illegal in the county we are getting married in. Smiley sad

Your venue probably also has rules about what can be done so it would be best to check with them. Some other ideas could be confetti or bubbles, paper planes.

    Good Luck

Oh and if you do sparklers you'll want to specifically get the wedding kind, they let off less smoke and make the pictures come our beautifully like the one above, whereas the normal sparklers let off so much smoke you don't get the same effect.

So I just had an idea to place glow sticks inside balloons, but this would require them to be blown up towards the end. Is it out of order to let guests participate in this and blow up their own as apart of the release?

So I've seen the sprinkles thing all over Pinterest too, but, words of caution - sprinkles are basically little sugar pellets mixed with FOOD COLORING. Not sure how safe that would be around a wedding dress.

I like the sparkler idea. It is an evening wedding so that would be pretty. Hence my wanting the lanterns.

I just found LED helium balloons online and looked at pictures! These seem like they'll give me a similar effect as the lanterns without the $500 fine or a 30 day honeymoon to jail!!

FYI, Mrs. BG-- sparklers are illegal in NJ as well. You're kind of out of luck with anything firework-related. Smiley sad

Sparklers are definitely legal in NJ.. my venue allows them. some venues even allow fireworks.. unfortunately mine does not because its located in a park.

fireworks are illegal to buy in Nj though.. you have to cross the border into PA

Please don't release helium balloons-- they are sooo soo awful for the environment/animals, and even the "biodegradable" ones last long enough to be eaten by birds and kill them.

I'm a fan of bubble exits, and I have been see more and more exits with the flexible glow sticks that are cool.

Amy-- just b/c a venue allows something, that doesn't mean its legal. Most places don't bother to know or follow the law. Fireworks of any kind are illegal to buy, sell, or use in NJ. NJ is also notorious for strictly enforcing the law (not just with fines, but with prison), so I'd be very careful about breaking the law-- regardless of what your venue says.

@Rosie, I read something similar to that! Good point.

@Barbara, I'm not leaning towards tradition at all (bubbles and rice) for our exit. I am using bubbles for the ceremony exit, but want something else for the reception exit. I'll have to check out the flexible glow sticks.

There may be laws about releasing balloons as well, as they are so harmful to the environment.

I agree with the people above. The reason for the law about releasing lanterns may be that it is so terrible for the environment. With that being the case there might be a similar law with releasing balloons. Besides, do you really want to do clean up on that? The balloons would probably end up off site somewhere, meaning that you would either have to hire or convince someone to go after them to clean it up. Whatever you decide on, please don't leave a bunch of balloons with glow sticks in them someplace! Birds and animals will end up eating the balloons, and the glow sticks will probably poison some of them or leak into the ground/water systems.

Rose petals are pretty. As are confetti. Here are some other ideas:

    We are doing ribbon wands.

But I also think a good idea for you would be glow necklaces. But rather than making necklaces with them have people hold the end then wave them. The effect is cool.

Don't release paper lanterns or balloons. The paper lanterns can be a big fire hazard, and both are bad for the environment.
