I think its a cute idea but here are my thoughts:

    1. Melting-I'd be worried it would melt before it got cut for everyone

    2. I'm lactose intolerant and would be bummed.

    Suggestions

    1. Have a wedding cake and let the grooms cake be an ice cream cake

    2. Have cupcakes with an ice cream bar

I'd just do it for the groom's cake

Do you have a DOC or someone who would be bringing it out, since it can't just sit on a table all night?

My FMIL had it for her wedding in September; they completely forgot to cut it since it was in the freezer. It worked out well for us, though, since we had it later that night at her house and had to split it between fewer people.

It's really hard to do ice cream cake for a large crowd. You can't just cut it for everyone and then bring it out on plates when it's all cut. In order to cut it, it's got to have sat out for a while to make it soft enough. And if you then try to cut the whole thing before beginning to serve, the first pieces will be melted before you finish.

Your other alternative is to bring it out a little at a time--but that means that the last people to be served are all sitting around hungry and looking at the cake on other people's plates.

I'd save the ice cream cake for a smaller crowd.

Save it for the grooms cake imo. Or can you have a little ice cream sundae bar, or something similar to go with the regular cake?

Id save it for the grooms cake or get a small one for just the two of you to share after the wedding is over.

I went to a wedding at a farm. The reception was in an open barn. After some dancing in warm weather it was great! Everyone loved it.

How about for the RD instead of the wedding?

We had any requests for this, and we never did it because we couldn't figure out how to pull it off.

I love the grooms cake idea (as long as it's not Fudgie the Whale....) and the small cake for you two.

Another thought; we did a number of weddings with a little cake at each table for the centerpiece (cost effective and very cute). Then you could do yours as an ice cream cake, to be brought out at the appropriate time.

Lol fudgie the whale! I like the idea but i just don't see how it could be pulled off. I mean lke Celia said maybe do a bunch of smaller ones and bring them to the table at appropriate time. I just see it being a melty mess! I would skip it and do it for a smaller crowd! PS i loveeeee ice cream cake Smiley winking

I wanted one too because I love ice cream. But we were worried about it melting in July.
