i need to vent!

Destinnie, on November 12, 2020 at 2:45 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
We were originally set to get married March 21,2020 but of course covid hit and our venue cancelled. I originally told them that we would just postpone. Then we decided to buy a house this year instead so decided to wait til next year to have our wedding. Well where we purchased our house, there’s a venue about 10 minutes up the road, which just so happens to also be 5 minutes away from the church where we’ll host the ceremony, where as our original venue was in a whole nother city, and a 30 minute drive from our church ceremony. I’m at a loss though because our venue will not refund any money. 😩😩 we paid $1000 to hold our date which they transferred to the new date, but since then, they sold the venue and is now being tun by new owners. I’m wondering should I count it as a loss or just have the reception there anyway even though I really don’t want to anymore

I personally would do a loss and host a backyard wedding at newly purchased house.

It depends, is the new venue more expensive, less expensive, the same amount? Can you afford to lose the $1,000 deposit or is it going to make or break? And does the new venue have your date available? There’s a few different factors I’d consider but if it all works out to be better going to the new venue I would probably just go with that one.

That $1,000 is a sunk cost. You have already spent it and there's no way to get it back. Going through with a reception at that venue will cost way more than $1,000, which would be fine if you still wanted that. But since you don't want a reception there any more, I would not use the sunk cost to make your decision. Instead, decide if you want to spend the remaining amount at that venue, another venue, or not at all. There's your answer.

If you can afford to take the loss, that’s probably the option that will make you most happy in the end. it also sounds as though it would be much more convenient for you and your guests.

In the grand scheme of wedding costs, $1,000 really isn't that much. I would take the loss and book the closer venue. I'm sure your guests will appreciate not having to drive 30 minutes from the ceremony to the reception also.

I feel like since we originally booked it over a year ago, the money has been gone for so long that it doesn’t make or break things. We went to a friends wedding last night that was in the same city as ours. (We live in sarasota and the original venue is on st Pete beach) and it kinda validated what I’ve been feeling. It was such a hassle driving there in rush hour traffic. As hers was in the evening. But also driving back late at night 😩😩
