All else being equal, I would choose based on experience, most recent referrals and reputation. If there is a venue coordinator you particularly like or trust ask for their recommendations and feedback. Reviews can be useful, though you never know if the good ones are all legitimate. I would also ask to see their work, for example a room that is all set up ahead of time, a portfolio, etc. For food, as mentioned, do tastings ahead of any commitment. Local media covering weddings can be a good way to figure out the popular vendors in your area, too. Wedding planners know all the key players, if that's in the budget. Sometimes you can do a consultation only arrangement.
