i need advise on hairspray... migraine-related

Joy, on May 30, 2021 at 7:03 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 10

Hello guys! I have been researching online and I do not have a definite answer just yet. Do any of you get migraines from hairspray? I am wondering if there are alternatives out there that would not trigger a migraine. I am my sister's MOH on her wedding this coming August 28, 2021 and I really do not want to ruin her big day if I get migraines. I have been having migraines since I was in my late 20s. It is hormonal-related (the monthly cycle) and it can also be triggered by changes in weather (barometric changes) and I guess, hairsprays. I have not used hairsprays all my life because I know I'll get a headache. I thought I have overcome it but when I had a trial run of hair and makeup about a month ago, I got a migraine about 5 hours later. I had to shower and it went away. I do have prescription migraine medications and plan on taking them prophylactically on the day of (it is sumatriptan). I have also bought unscented hairsprays and going to try it on my day off. Any further advise would be very much appreciated!

Addendum: Hair gel also causes me migraines.

Do you have to have your hair in an elaborate updo? I think if you wear your hair in a more simple way, you could maybe just skip it altogether? It's probably likely that whatever chemicals exist to keep hair in place are going to trigger a migraine, so I would just try to pick a hairstyle that can stay with just the use of bobby pins or a hair clip.

Would you be opposed to getting Botox injections in the top of your forehead? You won’t have any headaches at all.

In addition to my post, Botox will also help prevent you from sweating on your forehead if it’s hot out. And yes it’s also beneficial if you have any little wrinkles. And it’s really not expensive at all. And depending on how quickly your body uses up the Botox, it typically lasts anywhere for six months give or take. So your results will last even after the wedding and you won’t get headaches at all.

Thanks for the reply! It's not even an updo (I am reading that as something that your hair is up, I apologize if I am wrong). My sister chose the style, she wants it to be ethereal-like (lord of the rings elf etc). I am attaching a picture here. This is my hair after the trial (no extensions, just bobby pins and hairspray):

Thank you!! To be honest I am considering anything at this point as long as it is guaranteed to work lol. I have thought about botox (just scared that I might not look like myself lol) and even get the monthly injection for migraines. I will look into Botox Smiley smile

I’m glad I could help! And trust me! You will totally look like yourself! Just do your research and make sure you go to someone that specializes with treatment for things like migraines and such. They do not hurt at all and no one will ever know, because I know sometimes people get judgy about things like Botox. I really hope this works out for you because I know how bad migraines can be and how debilitating they are. Good luck!

I would see if maybe the style will stay without the hair spray, and yep that's exactly the definition of an updo that I was talking about! DJ Tanner also gave a good recommendation. There's a lot of research supporting botox for migraines, so I would talk to your neurologist (or whoever you see for your migraine management) about that as a potential option for you, as that could maybe provide more relief outside of just hairspray related migraines.

I think Botox for migranes is a great suggestion.
I would also consider hairstyles that can work without hair spray. When I curl my hair I use a mousse that doesn't have the same chemical "pow" that hair sprays or gels do, but it holds a curl well and keeps my hair soft. I don't know if that would work for you, but might be worth considering.
