i know this is silly, but bad juju?

Ashley, on October 15, 2018 at 4:41 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

So FH and I aren't really superstitious, but I had a thought regarding the first dance. We originally weren't going to do one because we'd rather cut off our fingertips than be the center of attention like that (the entire ceremony I'll be sweating bullets). My aunt then suggested we do a group first dance with BM & GM. Okay, not a bad plan.

Here's where I'm getting caught up. I'd love for it to be to Journey's "Faithfully", but that's what my (divorced) parents' first dance song was. As I said, we're not superstitious, but this seems like it could be one of those things that we shouldn't do. Any thoughts on this?

Oh girl, the church we are getting married in is the church FH grew up going to but its also the church allllll of FH family has gotten married in. 3 of those marriages ended in divorce. I joked with his mom that maybe we shouldn't, but she just laughed it off with me. Honestly, every marriage is different and I'm sure a ton of people danced to that song as their first dance and ended up divorced (and I'm sure a ton of people danced to it and are still married!)

Also side note, I've seen the group dance at a cousins wedding and it worked rather well. They announced the bride and groom first and they danced to a few lines, then they started introducing bridal party. It was actually a cool way to introduce bridal party and keep all of the attention off of only the bride and groom!

Superstition is poppycock. However, I wouldn't dance to the song your divorced parents danced to as it may be awkward and painful for them. There are thousands of songs you can choose from - don't pick the one song that could bring back painful memories for your parents.

Agree with this, totally mis-read and didn't realize it was your parents. Do you and FH have a special song that would work?

My parents don't mind, my mom suggested it and my dad thought it was a cool idea. They've been separated for 24 years so they're not really bothered by it. We don't really have a song so I guess we may just forego it or start googling stuff!

I would just pick a different one... I dont think it's bad juju necessarily but if its bothering you enough to question you'd be better off going with a different song.

You guys could spend a night just relaxing at home and listening to songs on Youtube! Whatever songs really speak to you could be the perfect one! FH and I often love to just sit at home and listen to music together, especially old country, lol.

This is what I was thinking too. Ultimately its your wedding and your decision but, I wouldn't want to make my parent's uncomfortable.

I don't believe in the bad luck aspect of it but if you are then just choose another song. It might be fun to dance to a slightly faster song if you're doing it in a group.

If no one is bothered by it then I would do it, but if you're double guessing yourself it would probably be worth picking a different song.

I'm not really superstitious, but I would choose a different song unless this one is significant to the two of you.
