i just realized that i bought the same dress as Fh's sister in law had for her wedding 6 years ago!

Rachel, on April 9, 2018 at 11:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 42

In late October, I bought my dress. I had my mom, sister, my dad, my step mom and my fmil with me at David's Bridal and the decision was easy. I fell in love with my dress. I thought it was flattering it made me happy and it was on sale so it was actually $200 under budget. I was on FB today and FH's brother posted a photo from their wedding in 2012 with a mushy quote. Much to my horror, I realized that I bought the same dress!!! I wasn't with my FH when they got married so I had no idea when I picked it. I'm so upset!! I don't have the budget for a new dress and it has been five months so I doubt David's Bridal will take it back. Even if they do, I would have to start searching again... I'm not sure what to do.

If you love the dress still wear it. If your future mother in law didn't notice I doubt anyone else will (besides your FH sister in law). Maybe can can always think of finding a way to customize it like straps or something if you can afford it. Also maybe just make sure your styling is different too.

It's a lovely dress! This wouldn't give me reason to get a new dress, though, it's a coincidence. I don't see how it would be a big deal, plus their wedding was years ago. She would probably be the only person who would even notice.

I agree with everyone else. People won’t notice. If you love it and feel beautiful in it (which you do look amazing in it) then I say don’t change a thing!

Thank you guys! I'm just slightly wigging out... I'm going to talk to my MOH and my FMIL. I don't think most people would notice. And I really do love my dress.

By adding simple accessories you can make the dress your own. At my junior prom a friend had the same dress without me knowing it. I wore opera length glove to match the main color of the dress and wore a very decorative but inexpensive piece of jewelry. No one noticed until we were standing next to each other. Everyone said they wouldn't have noticed the were the same unless we pointed it out when we were in the same spot. Accessories can make a dress seem completely different

Wear it if you love it! If it gives you confidence that’s all that matters! Also, dresses look differently on people, so don’t sweat it!

I think it’s kinda cool, a good story anyway! I’m sure no one will remember that she wore the same one.

To be honest, the only person who will probably realise is FSIL. Others might notice you have a similar style but won't remember the exact details of it. I'd probably mention it to her next you saw her that you just saw that picture and what a huge coincidence it was. Wear the dress and don't stress over it

I agree with everyone else FSIL will be the only one to notice. You could even make a few changes to give it your personality. Maybe some colored tulle, adding or taking away beading, changing the train, or any accessories.

I would still wear it! It’s a beautiful dress, it was actually my dress for awhile but I ended up buying a new dress (bought too early and style preferences changed).

If you love the dress, keep it and rock it! You look stunning in the dress. Nobody will notice. They WILL notice you wearing a gorgeous dress on one of your happiest days. That's what is important Smiley smile

I don't think this is a problem. This is your dress, and you look beautiful in it. It really doesn't matter if someone else also loved it. Just rock it!

It's still YOUR dress. Customize, and don't let it bother you.

That dress is so pretty! I honestly wouldn’t even worry because if your FMIL didn’t notice then I doubt anyone else will. If you are worried, maybe you can send FSIL a message and let her know that you picked the same dress and didn’t realize it. I would think of it as great minds think alike! Also you could always try adding a sash or something if you want it to be a little different!

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Maybe tell your FSIL the same story as told here, and see what she says. She may very well think it's a cute coincidence (I did!). That way, no surprises on the wedding day for her. And, as you said, no one else even seems to realize it.

You look beautiful in it, by the way!

Unless you have the same face, height, weight, body proportions, hair color and style, AND styling flair, you won't look the same. Relax and enjoy your pretty dress

I agree that you should wear it! It looks great on you, and you didn't know when you bought it. Nobody will think you purposely picked the same dress. Most people probably won't even notice. They will be looking at you not comparing to another wedding.

Considering you were not at the wedding no one will even think of the comparison. If you want you can add a belt .
