I have a short torso and am not looking forward to dress shopping.

Jacquelyn, on November 27, 2014 at 1:23 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

I am worried about going out dress shopping and not having things fit me. I know that people often get dresses altered, but what do they do if the bride wants a mermaid style and everything she tries on the waist is sitting on the hips. I have a nice figure, well I think I do at least, and I would like something so show it off, but my past experiences leave me looking for something slinky and not fitted. Maybe its a stupid question, but can they make things shorter in the torso and have it still look the same? I'm in no way petite (I'm 5'6") and am quite brood in the shoulders, am very long legged, and have a fairly sizable rump. Sigh. I know how to dress my body type but It usually has to be a separate top and bottom.

I haven't tried on anything, I'm waiting for my mom, but I was wondering if anyone else has had issues with the bodice being too long and the skirt being too short and what cut looked best? Are there any designers that you found fit the best? Thanks everyone

Don't stress too much :-) Once you go shopping you will figure out what works best for you. Between trying them on & the help of a good consultant, it makes a huge difference. I'm only 5 feet tall.. So like nothing fit me! I figured out I needed a really short/natural waist line. Once I got that down, I ended up finding dresses I loved!! I ended up buying a ball gown with a natural waist line & sweetheart neckline. :-)

I have the same issue (longer legs, shorter torso), but I am petite. I asked them if the "petite" version of the dresses came with a shorter torso, and the general answer was "no"...they were just shorter in length in the front. I ended up cutting the "two pieces" out all together and picking a dress with an inner corset and a "sheath", one piece look on the outside. It's slimming, and there's no way for it to fall in the "wrong spot" since it's all one piece.

I have the opposite problem, super short legs and a long torso. I think you will be fine. My drop waist gown barely hit my hips and they had to hack off about 6 inches from the hem.

Good luck shopping for your dress. I am sure the right dress will find you.

Natural Waist dresses seemed REALLY short waisted on me, might be worth trying one on?

I'm also very short torsod and the only problem I had is that sometimes dresses with built in belts which were supposed to be at my waist were actually around my belly button and looked weird. 5'6" is plenty tall to have no problems trying on dresses, but many bring a few heels as well. I'm 5'9" and wore three inch heels and none of my dresses needed to be hemmed

I had the same problem. I'm 5'7 short torso and long legs. Always thought I'd look best in mermaid style. They looked terrible on me. I ended up with a fit and flare with an assymetrical dropped waist. I still got to show off my bod, but it flattered my body type. Make sure you try on every style possible to see what works best!

True I didn't like mermaid on me and I also would like to think I have a nice figure. I went for fit and flare.

Me too!!! Long chest (there is a TON of space between my collarbone and my boobs), short torso, long legs. Ugh. I got a ballgown style (but knee length....its adorable!) I loved it because it nips in at my waist to look small, so it doesn't matter how short my torso is. I hope you find what you're looking for!

Drop waist! I'm just short all around, but especially in the torso. I also had an asymmetrical drop waist and it makes your torso look longer.

KirstenMichelle- who is your dress by?

I have the same issue...I am under 5ft with extremely short torso and legs...super curvy and I have been told to look for a drop waist fit and flare dress...I'll see if I can upload a pic of the ones I've tried on.

KirstenMichelle your dress is gorgeous!! you look fantastic!

Jacquelyn, as a few others have said I would think drop waist is a good place to start. I haven't tried on dresses yet but those will be the first ones I try - I'm 5'5 and also have long legs, short torso and large boobs... my FW is 5'7 and my legs are longer then hers! I'm really hoping that a drop waist will give the illusion of a longer torso and even me out... also because of my large chest I find that anything with a higher waist just blends my boobs and my stomach making we look SOO top heavy and round.

I'm 4'11" and therefore have a short torso, legs, etc. You will see what flatters you once you begin dress shopping. Be open to trying on all sorts of dresses and silhouettes-- 1) you never know what you might end up liking and 2) trying on wedding dresses is actually fun! (coming from a girl who does not like trying on regular dresses). I found that drop waist dresses versus natural waist dresses gave me the illusion of a longer torso and a slimmer silhouette as well! Good luck!

Consider looking at dresses with dropped waists. It will elongate your torso.

Try not to stress until you actually try things on and see how they look. You might find that they look better than you think they will, or that the style you thought you liked you actually don't, etc. Good luck!

You might also look at the 2-piece BM dresses (top & separate skirt). Some can be ordered in white or ivory.

KM, gorgeous! I think I looked at that dress!

OP, just be open to trying on different styles. when I first went dress shopping, I had no idea what I was looking for. I'm 5'6, short torso, long legs, all T and no A. Everything that I tried on with a belt, I knew I'd want to remove. You'll be surprised at the versatility of the styles, just have an open mind. Best of luck!

The dress will be made to order so the dress will be made according to your measurements. everything will be scaled proportionately to your body. I would go with something fitted like mermaid or fit and flare or trumpet to show off your body as opposed to something like a ballgown and empire waist that might drown you.
