I gave a check at their wedding 11/3 and she STILL hasn't cashed it!?

Kat, on December 15, 2013 at 11:15 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

Of course I did what anyone else would do after this long - I contacted the bride to make sure she got it and there wasn't any problems trying to cash it. She said she hasn't had a chance to get to the bank. Really? It's so inconsiderate when I'm trying to balance my checkbook and and after over 6 weeks still make sure that money is there.

Giving cash was not an option after all the stolen present stories I've heard, and after my own wedding I certainly appreciated getting money over a gift card, registry etc. It's just so incredibly frustrating to have to chase after someone to accept a gift you gave them. I understand people order custom thank you cards and they take a while, but please cash the check, and send a thank you later!

This is one of my pet peeves in any gift giving situation. That's why I have started doing official checks instead. I work in banking so I do have the luxury of getting free official checks but I am so anal retentive about balancing my check book I hate being off .

Eh, I could be the odd one out on this one but it's not THAT long ago- especially if she has a full-time job. Some bank hours are really awful and with the holidays I can assume her weekends have been packed plus assuming she might have been away for a week on a honeymoon plus taking the time to dig out after the wedding (I know that took me awhile) she might not have had the chance yet.

I can certainly appreciate you not being happy but don't let it get you too upset.

Personally, I also took the time to go through every present I got to make a list and that took my husband and I a few days- I want to make sure everyone gets thanked properly and we had a lot of cards to go through.

We got married in August and didn't cash most of our checks until October/November. A lot of them were made out to Mr. and Mrs. T and I'm not changing my name, so I wanted to wait until we got our marriage license back (so had to deal with getting it from out of state). We also had to set up a new account with my in-laws because H is in school and I will be, and if it's in our names, then we have to count it as income and won't get loans for tuition and would have literally no savings.

Same thing happened to me. The wedding was at the end of October and the check was just cashed a few weeks ago. It was tough after a while to remember where my money was supposed to go to, but I know they were super busy so I didn't want to say anything

Good point about the check being made out to Mr and Mrs. That can definitely put a hold on things.

We're all busy. It's what you make time for. I also work full-time banker's hours so I went to the bank on my lunch break. I recorded every present received as soon as I got one and I sent out my thank you notes in that order (used WW to keep track).

I know the feeling. NWR but our dog trainer sat on my check for a month and a half. Kept asking him to cash it and he said he would, but didn't. I finally contacted his supervisor and it was cashed that day. So frustrating...hate paying by check sometimes.

It's almost 2014 you can deposit checks by taking a picture with your phone! I would be super irritated too!! Don't you want your money lol

I think you're being silly. You know you wrote the check and the funds immediately deducted from your balance. She will cash it when she has time.

Next time...do a money order if this bothers you so much.

I don't know there situation but I also work bankers hours only get a half hour lunch and the closest bank is 20 minutes from work. There may be extenuating circumstances I know it doesn't help you.

That's ridiculous. You can deposit checks from your phone now! And banks are open Saturdays. Plus you can deposit at ATMs basically 24/7. I could see if she was waiting to change her name, but she "didn't have time"?? Come on.

Tell her you're giving her another week and then you're cancelling the check. She'll find time then!!

NWR but our landlord will sometimes wait 3 or 4 months before cashing rent checks and FH hates it! The rent checks come out of his checking account and he only keeps a certain amount in that account (just in case there is ever fraud, the criminals can only get at a certain amount of money) and then moves the overage amount into savings. It makes it difficult to do when the landlord deposits multiple checks at once!

Well I guess I need to get with the program. I didn't know you could deposit at an ATM and have no clue how to go about it using a phone. My bank is not open on Saturdays. But there still could be some other reason I guess I am one of those people who give people the benefit of the doubt. I most certainly would not take a present back though.

We had a DW and a local reception on 12/7/13 where we got A LOT of cards with checks, cash, and gift cards. Due to DH's health (cancer) we're still living over an hour apart from each other, only seeing each other on weekends, so we've still not merged our bank accounts. Plus I'm not changing my name so it was rather annoying to get so many checks made out to Glenda & Jeffrey Q. Heck, one check was made out to BELINDA & Jeffrey Q.! Are you kidding me?!

With all the wedding, honeymoon and X-mas bills, we still didn't put off cashing or depositing the money too long. But it could've easily taken us six weeks to cash the checks though too, esp if we hadn't already done the honeymoon last month. Fortunately his bank isn't too picky and allow him to deposit them even if my name's not on the account (I think his mom signed my name!).

Not to start a big debate on honeymoon registries, but here's where I will also express that I would've preferred people give us money with a credit or debit card on honeyfund.com rather than via a check or even cash in a card--even if doing it via credit card resulted in a small fee being taken out!

On honeyfund.com I was able to set it up that once a week, all the money automatically got deposited into my bank account. I HATE going to the bank or ATM and with being so busy with wedding/honeymoon stuff the past months, saving me from another trip to the bank was worth the fee honeyfund charged for accepting money via a credit card!!!

Just to dispell any misinformation, not all banks have eDeposit yet. That said, 99% of banks have Saturday hours and they take deposits at ATMs, so she really has no excuse.

I will just say that if you give a check to a couple...just make it out to one of them. When it's made out to both, especially if you use the bride's "new" name, it's a giant pain. Both people have to go to the bank in person, together, one has to sign every check over to the other, then sign and deposit.

Since we were putting it in my account, and everyone used my new name, I also needed my marriage license as proof because changing your name takes time as well.

Luckily the gov was shut down so we had time to do this, but not every couple can easily get to a bank during the time the bank is open to do this.

This may not be the case for you OP, but just mentioning it.

I was told I had to wait. I had to wait like a month. The return of the marriage license and my name change. While we can deposit online doesn't mean we're all comfortable. I'd hate to be rude but if you're truly worried about it coming out perhaps you shouldn't have written a check. People are busy and not all can leave on lunch break like you can. Bank hours

Don't always work And then with Christmas coming up maybe she's just been too busy.
