i don’t know if i like my altered dress

Sydney, on February 4, 2022 at 11:33 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
So when I first picked my dress out, I loved it. And I still think it’s cute, but I’m not sure if I like my alterations. The dress isn’t really a mermaid type gown, but I wanted it taken in the sides a bit more (it fits when tied but I can use my hands to pull it tighter if that makes sense and I like it the tightness it gives) I also wish my backside looked a little better in the dress. Any ideas on what I should do or do you all think it looks fine? I just picked it up today and I’m sure David’s won’t take it back to alter again. I’ve spent more on alterations that I did the actual dress in the first place. What should I do? i don’t know if i like my altered dress 1

It's really beautiful! I wouldn't stress about it, maybe you're just a little too close to the situation to see the bigger picture. If you have a little time, maybe put it away for a bit then try it on again in the comfort of your own home and you'll feel better? 🙏

The dress is beautiful, but I can completely understand what you are saying about wanting it a bit more fitted. I think if you had the dress taken in a bit more on the hips and thighs it would give you more shape and would definitely accomplish what you are wanting with the backside, as it looks as though they have left the dress quite loose in the back. I’d call David’s Bridal and let them know the dress has not been taken in enough and see what they will do for you. If they won’t do the alterations, or are going to charge you a ton to do them, I would consult an independent seamstress. They are oftentimes more affordable than seamstresses who work for large chain stores.

Often with trumpet/mermaid style dresses you have to pose a certain way to achieve the shape in pictures, but still be able to move otherwise. The model in the picture is leaning her right hip out and her left knee is slightly bent to achieve more of that shape. Play around with poses for a few minutes, hold the dress tight like you want and try walking, bending, sitting, etc., then either call David's Bridal or search for an independent seamstress in your area that does bridal alterations. It's a beautiful dress!!

The wedding is in September. I’m very tiny. I’m 4”11 and 91 pounds. I can take my hands and tighten it along my hips. I feel like it’s not as fitted as it should be. But what do you all think?

Personally, I completely agree with you. The dress has definitely not been taken in enough for you. David’s Bridal needs to fix it.

So I just got back and they actually charged me 70$ to redo it!! I’m a little upset because they acted like they didn’t want to fix multiple things. They are taking it in more below the waistline so hopefully it’ll fit better when I get it back! I’ll keep you guys updated. I really appreciate you all! It was pretty when I tried it on yesterday, but I felt like it wasn’t tight enough in the bottom area which is something I’d like to compliment instead of looking like a board 🤦‍♀️

Im so glad you decided to pursue these changes! By no means did the dress look bad on you, but you deserve to LOVE your dress and feel beautiful and confident in it! Crossing my fingers for you that they get it right this time!! And if they don’t, don’t leave until they do!

They made me pay extra for the alterations. So if it comes back worse than before, what do I do? I’ve finally paid more on alterations that my dress total. And I’m super worried they will mess up again. I wouldn’t recommend using them as a bridal salon to anyone. At least not for alterations. They were also very rude and slow. The lady who took me back left me with two other women working in there and did not show up until way after I had my dress on.

Unfortunately I’ve heard numerous horror stories about DB’s alterations department. It seems as though they never want to take accountability for their shortcomings, and only respond when you get firm with them. Honestly, I wouldn’t have paid them to fix their mistake- they should have done it for free. If you go back and it’s still not right, I would tell them that you were very clear on what you wanted, the seamstress said she understood and could execute it, yet didn’t deliver. Tell them you already paid an additional fee to fix her work once, and now you expect them to honor their word and supply the alterations you have already requested and paid for. Be firm with them. Request to speak to a manager (or even their corporate office) if you have to. You paid for a service and they need to provide it. Think of it like going to McDonalds… if you ordered a Big Mac and they gave you a cheeseburger, you’re going to point out the error and request they give you the Big Mac you ordered. Could you imagine if they told you “well, you got a cheeseburger, that’s close enough. If you want the Big Mac you ordered, you’re going to have to pay for it again”?!

Quite honestly as beautiful as this dress is I think I would go for a mermaid dress. Perhaps you can wear this for the rehearsal dinner or engagement pics. I don’t think that this can really captures how beautiful you are.

They are trying to take it in more to give me that mermaid look. I am definitely a budget bride, so buying another dress is out of question for me. However, I could have if I didn’t spent 380$ on alterations. I’m very petite, so I’m hoping they get this right as far as “framing it to my actual body and complimenting my butt and hips) I do love the droopy sleeves. It’s super boho and originally that was my wedding style.

You are totally right! Unfortunately, I’m a softie so if they don’t get it right this time, I’ll be taking my aunt with me or having my partner call and demand a refund. I really liked this dress when I first got it, but I’m not really sure if this is the one anymore. I wish I would have gotten an actual mermaid style dress instead of asking them to do it that way for me and for my figure. Again, I’m really petite. I spent 340$ on this dress (my budget was no more than around 300-400, but I’ve spent 380$ on alterations when I could’ve just went to get another dress. So at this point and as many times as I have tried it on, I’m not loving it anymore. It was the third one I picked at my first appointment that was in my budget. I wish I would have continued shopping around first, but I was really
    Excited for my first appointment.

I’m so sorry this has been your experience. Don’t give up on your dress yet, though! You may only feel this way because the alterations were not done properly and you are swimming in your dress! The sleeves and back have such a dreamy boho vibe, and once the dress is altered correctly to actually fit your body and show more curves, you may end up falling in love with it all over again!

I hope so cece!! Thank your for your positive vibes girl! There was a reason I chose it in the first place, even though I bought at the first store I shopped at. They always say not to do that or to choose before you choose your venue 🤦‍♀️ Hopefully it works out for the best!
