I am filing for FASFA and I have a large savings account?

FutureMrs.Gomes, on May 6, 2011 at 12:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

Will this affect me from receiving financial aid? The money is there for my wedding and I dont know if this will keep me from receiving Financial Aid. It's asking for checking and savings, but says to not include any CD's or Money Market accounts. I dont know if I should just put my money in a CD now for 6 months.

    Not sure.

What state are you in? I ask because I may be able to dig up a FAFSA expert for you in your area (until 5 pm today at least, I work in college access).

This is a website my employer manages, it's a national directory of college access, financial aid, etc programs:

    I'm a horrible, horrible person...

FAFSA is more concerned with your income levels. There is no verification of what you have in a savings/checking account. You'll have to submit tax returns, and possibly W-2s, but not bank statements.

If you don't want to lie, transfer all the funds to an account in FH's name. Then, you have no savings.

You can put the money in your FH account... that will not effect your student loans at all. I did that when I applied for my student loans. It's better to be safe then sorry

No, not in CA anyway. They only consider your income, not your assets. In fact, I've never even seen an asset declaration page on any of their forms. You should be fine.

For FAFSA assistance in Florida, try:

    www.facts.org (online advising)

www.nelnet.net/collegeplanning or college planning counselors toll-free at 1.866.866.7372

    http://www.rotaryfutures.org/

The ladies are most likely right, but when it comes to financial aid it's best to talk to a college planning counselor if you can.

Analy- they added the assets declaration page on last year's FAFSA. I had never seen it before either- but now it's on there... Sucks.

I don't qualify anyway, but you still have to apply to attempt to get student loans.

FMG, I would just pick up the phone and call one of the organizations I listed...no sense worrying until you've got things confirmed. Why borrow trouble?

In TX there is a button that says "Do not include assets" and that's what I did. Didn't even ask for my checking account, savings account, or stocks/CDs/Money Market stuff.

I also filed as an independent and didn't reveal my parents income/savings/etc.

I still got all the money I needed to cover tuition and fees, but not enough for living expenses unless I took out the unsubsidized loans.

It sucks that they added that. But it's worded something like "as of today" so the financial aid rep @ my school recommended I either withdrawal the money or transfer to a family members account temporarily when I submitted the form. But like Meghan said, they don't verify that like they do with income.

That is total and complete crap. (And now I feel really old. Good grief, I attended CC almost 10 years ago.)

Is this for undergrad or a grad degree?

I'm in FL and for my grad degree I can opt out of submitting that kind of information and it doesn't affect my eligibility for aid.

I have had CD's in the past and if you have enough to qualify for one - be sure you will not need a dime of that money for the CD term. There were wicked fee's (at least at my bank) if I were to ever need to break into the CD before the term was up.

You have the option of not including your assets on your fafsa, I did one in March.

Or, you could just call one of the financial aid counselors from the list? It's free.

I agree with Shannon. Call one of the counselors! It's free, and they are familiar with all the ins and outs of the programs available. And make friends with a financial aid rep at your school! They can be your best ally when these questions come up. They can also guide you to private scholarships your school may offer that can help.
