Hyphenated Last Names, need advice

Ann, on June 13, 2019 at 10:43 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 3
I am still trying to decide what I want to do with my last name. I have heard that hyphenated names can cause administrative issues, but I was hoping for some insight from some people who have experience with these kinds of names!

Is it the length of the last name that causes issues (and the potential for misspelling or the name not fitting on forms), or the hyphen itself that causes problems? I have heard stories of some people having issues at the doctor's office, but those stories involved someone going by only one of the hyphenated names, which caused confusion.

If I hyphenated, my name would be 12 characters, including hyphen. Which is long, but I don't think is too bad? Anyone glad that they hyphenated? Regret it?

I don't think the length is that bad (my maiden name is 11 letters on its own [I'm not hyphenating, just saying for reference that I don't think it will be too bad. I've only ever had one or two things in my life that had an issue with the length of my name, and that was just because of school for standardized testing])

My friends that have hyphenated names, the issue is the hyphen. Depends on who puts it into a system. Some use the first half of the name, some use the second half and some omit the hyphen altogether. It always gets messed up for them.

I’m keeping my maiden name without the hyphen I also heard the hyphen can cause admin issues. Although I will primarily use my married last name.
