How to tell Wedding Party we are eloping early but still planning our big wedding?

Lacey, on April 1, 2020 at 9:29 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

Hey all! My FH and I are supposed to get married on 6/20/20 but we know that is a big if at this point. With everything going on we have decided that we want to elope with just an officiant (no witnesses needed in IL) on 4/10/20. I want to find the proper way to let our wedding party know, so they won't feel hurt or weird by our change in plans. We still plan on having the big shindig in June or at a later date if needed. Any ideas to help smooth the conversation? I have three bridesmaids who are especially excited about our wedding and I know there will be some disappointment.

Thanks!

Could you send them a cute announcement with a picture from your ceremony? And speak to each one of them individually saying you would love them to be by your side when you get to celebrate with your family and friends. During this time I think your loved ones will be understanding that plans change! We got legally married before we had our wedding (non COVID related) and all our friends and family were supportive. They were just happy we were happy!

I think if we send them a photo after the fact it would make them more upset than if they knew in advance. Right now I am trying to get all of them together for a group video chat and hope to explain it all then. Wish me luck!

Hi Lacey, you're sweet to think about their feelings in this. I would call them ASAP and just talk them through your change in decision. Let them know the factors that you considered and that you want them to know it is still important to you that they are by your side whenever you are able to have your celebration. Do you still want them to wear BM gowns for the celebration? Will they have bouquets? Have you canceled any pre-wedding parties? Letting them know the plan and anticipating their questions might help them as well. Talking about how many wedding celebrations have been impacted by COVID will surely make them understand why you've future-proofed your plans to ensure you can still get married asap without risking the health of your guests or postponing the start of your marriage. Good luck! I'm sure they will support you!
