How to tell a vendor you’re going with someone else

Claire, on July 13, 2022 at 7:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
I wrote a discussion earlier this week about how long my photographer was taking to reply to me (2 weeks) and a few other hang ups with communication. As of yesterday they still hadn’t replied so I reached out to another photographer I had been considering originally and asked if she was still available for my date, and she replied within a day and said she was. Background, I haven’t signed a contract with the first photographer, it was me saying “we want to book you” over an email. Now my dilemma: I had been prepared to type up an email letting my photographer know I was going with someone else, but she emailed me back. I just don’t want to deal with this communication hassle that has been going on for 3 months. How do I tell her politely that I’ve decided to go with someone else? Is this even ok to do since I had told her originally that I wanted her to shoot my wedding?

It’s absolutely okay to back out. That’s business. It’s nothing personal. Especially since you haven’t signed anything. You can email her back and say thank you so much for your time, but after further consideration we have decided to go with another photographer. I’m pretty sure she will be okay with as it seemed like she didn’t really want to do it anyway.

Totally OK to switch to another photographer! You could word it as something along the lines of, "I appreciate your reply! We have decided to move forward with a different photographer who more closely matches what we are looking for. Thank you for your time, and best wishes." Since you never signed a contract with her, you don't owe her anything else.

Send the email you were going to send. You don’t owe anyone anything and it’s their own fault for taking so long in the first place.

I think you should be straight up and Say, due to poor communication, we are going with another photographer.
Our photographer and DJ always responded the same day, in fact usually within a couple of hours. This is how it should be done.

I might get some hate for this but if it took a vendor too long and I wanted to go with someone else I just didn’t reply to their email. Honestly I don’t owe them my business. There’s no contract that’s been written up yet. If they had poor communication skills then it’s on them

Thank you to everyone for all of your helpful advice! I did email my photographer and let her know it wasn’t working out and I was not going to pursue working with her. She was very kind about it (and emailed back very quickly about it) so that’s a relief
