How to store dress before the wedding?

Melissa, on June 24, 2017 at 4:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

Hey all! So I found the dress I wanted while shopping at bridal salons the past few weeks. Then, lucky enough, I found the exact dress for less than half the original price brand new, so I bought it as-is! I really didn't want to be holding onto a dress for so long, but I knew this was the dress and I was able to save a lot of $$. However, my issue is, what is the proper way to store it for a year? Right now it is in a fabric garment bag hanging in the closet. It is a full lace dress with silk lining. Google says hanging it may wear down the seams... and that you may need a specific bag to prevent discolouration... any experience with this?

I work in the bridal business and I am going to be honest, you should of asked about that very fact when buying the dress. Hanging a dress will put stress on any strap and the secondary straps can break leaving your dress in a big bunch on the bottom of the bag. I would called the bridal shop and ask who the recommend for alterations and contact them related to storing your dress until you complete alterations. Organza will change colors if exposed to high humidity and tuille will mildew.

Thanks @Dragana! We did ask, but it unfortunately wasn't bought from a bridal salon. We have an alterations lady that works out of her house, so I don't think she will be able to store it long-term. Is there a better way to store it at home? Laying in the closet maybe?

Melissa, unless the temperature and moisture can be controlled, I would not leave it in the closet on the floor. A friend had a similar situation with her daughter's wedding dress. Unfortunately, the only option that we could come to was having it professionally cleaned and preserved and putting it in an indoor storage facility.

Thanks @KitandKaboodle! Starting to wonder if saving the money on it was even worth it with all of this. Any idea on costs for cleaning/preserving?

I never thought of this. My dress spent about a month hanging in our closet, in two garment bags.. But last week, I moved it into our guest bedroom. It's still in 2 garment bags but it's laying on the bed. I live in Arizona, so high heat/low humidity and we keep our upstairs at about 73 degrees. I've had the dress for a month or so and we get married the first week of November. Any suggestions for me? Or is that not too long? Also, it will go to the seamstress early September.
