How to properly respond to a Declined wedding rsvp

Claudia, on May 19, 2022 at 10:02 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Greetings,

My Fiancé and I are getting married in Cabo this December and I have sent out invitations and have asked people to RSVP via email or text. When we decided to go the Destination route we knew not everyone would come and we were okay with that. We have started receiving RSVPS and a few have declined already. What is a good response to send guests who have let us know they will not be going?

Maybe something like, "Thank you for your reply! We will miss you at our wedding, but we totally understand."

Agree with Lisa! “I might write something like thank you for your consideration. We understand that a destination wedding is a heavy lift for all and totally understand how it may interfere with you attending. Thank you for your continuous love and support of our journey.”

Ooh, I like the wording on this, especially the "Thank you for your continuous love and support of our journey"!

I don’t think anything needs to be said. Accept that they aren’t able to attend and move on. Catch up with them after the wedding.

Yes, I really like the support of our journey one! I'd maybe add on something like 'we look forward to catching up with you to celebrate sometime soon' or 'when we return' or something like that!

That’s Interesting. I wasn’t aware that RSVP declines required responses.

I don't think they normally do. I've never heard of it.

OP, I know it's a destination wedding but you may have had declines because people don't know what they're doing yet because it's >6 months away.

I like what Sloane and Lisa suggested but You don't have to respond at all. You already know the reason why they won't make it and they know that you know it.

Thank you for the suggestions above! I'm not sure why but I guess I felt obligated to respond since they're reaching out via text or email even if it was just a quick "Thank you for your response. Your presence will be missed but we completely understand!"

🤷🏻‍♀️ but it's a nice peace of mind that a response isn't necessary.

I understand the wedding is still 6 months away but with it being a destination wedding we wanted to give people plenty of time to prepare and save if needed if they are planning on going especially with it being around the holidays.

Since it's via text/email, I'd definitely respond. But I'd keep it short and sweet. Just a quick "Thank you for letting me know. We'll miss you at the wedding, but look forward to connecting soon." or something. Obviously, you don't have to respond, I just would. Even just so they know you saw it. Have fun at your destination wedding! That sounds like so much fun!
