How to list a bridesmaid who won't physically be at the wedding?

Jeanne, on August 18, 2015 at 12:08 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

One of my bridesmaids had a family illness come up and won't be able to make the wedding. I would like to keep her in the program. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to list her? We have a groomsman who is deployed who is listed as First Lastname (deployed) - friend of the groom. I'd like to keep that same format.

Celebrating from afar is a good suggestion.

At my first wedding, we had a similar situation - one of our GM came down with mono and was unable to attend. We left him in the program and noted that he was ill and unable to attend.

Thanks. I think I'm going to go with "absent" or "in absentia", I feel weird putting "celebrating" when she's having such a hard time right now. It doesn't feel appropriate...not that anyone would know that but I would.

Ehh I'm sure your friend is still celebrating your wedding though? I think celebrating is appropriate. Even if it was one of my friends with a bad illness/in a coma, I'd still probably say she was celebrating honestly, since I know she would be happy for me!

I think "in absentia" seems...weird. I would still think your friend is celebrating (in her heart at least), even though she's missing the wedding for non-fun reasons.

Absent to me sounds like she's home sick from school. I like "in absentia."
