How to fly with a wedding dress??!

Helena, on December 8, 2018 at 12:21 AM Posted in Planning 0 7
I need help! I am getting married in Florida and flying Spirit airlines. I really would like to take my dress on the plane so I have it with me. I know it will need to be my “carry on” (right?). I need to know all info and advice, has anyone done this? Have tips? Can I just carry it on without putting it in a suit case and then put it in overhead?

What material is your wedding dress? For mine it’s mostly of Tulle, the bridal shop told me I can just fold it in a big ziploc bag, remove all the air in it and put it in my carry on. Having it in your carry on is way safer than your luggage as luggage can easy get lost in transit.

I’m taking all of my wedding attire with me (dress, shoes, jewelry, hair extensions/accessories) in my carry on to avoid anything getting lost or damaged.

I would ensure it's protected because travelers are inconsiderate and will smoosh it with their own carry ons if it's not in a hard case. Hopefully your destination venue has a steamer available. As someone who flies a lot, Spirit is...well...an experience in and of itself. Be sure to prepay for your carry ons, and upgrade to the big seats in front if you are able.

Spirit Airlines can be one of the most restrictive when it comes to carry on items...

    Their website says:

Can I bring my wedding dress onboard?

Of course you can! As long as it fits within our specified carry-on bag dimensions, standard carry-on baggage fees apply. Please know our aircraft does not offer additional hanging storage for garment bags.

Note the "as long as it fits within our specified carry-on bag dimensions" That should give you the idea that you are expected to fold it and get it inside a bag that measures 22 x 18 x 10 inches, including wheels. Their prices for one carry-on bag range from $27-55, depending on when you actually pay the fee.

If you are looking for any accommodation with a gown, you should call the airline to see if there is any wiggle room.

I’d contact the airline directly. From what I’ve heard most of them charge you for a carry on for it. Some will hang it up for you and some will make you put it in the overhead bin.

I would call to find out if maybe you can have it hung up at the front of the plane or something like that... if not, have it steamed when you get to Florida... Where by the way? Smiley laugh

My first time flying Spirit was this last weekend and you would be absolutely spot on with your description! I'd label it "The Greyhound Bus of the Skies".
