I am trying to figure how to go about the cake cutting. Of course we are going to cut the first piece.. but what about after that? Cutting the rest for the guests? I am trying to figure how to go about the cake cutting. Of course we are going to cut the first piece.. but what about after that? Cutting the rest for the guests? I believe the venue is going to charge us $350 for them to cut the cake.. which I think is really expensive.. (seeing as I am paying $500 for the DOC)... I have read a tip about the bride and groom cutting the cake and serving the guests as a way of saying hi and thanking them for coming but honestly I dont think I want to cut 120 pieces lol... I was thinking another option would be to have the bridesmaids cut it?

Does any one have any other options or advice on how to handle this?

Thanks in advance! Smiley smile

I would be sure to check with your cake baker or caterer in case they have some special instructions about how and where to make the first cut. They'll probably tell you to go for the bottom tier and take a very small slice. Then, frequently, your caterer will take over cutting and serving your cake. If that is cost-prohibitive perhaps your DOC might offer this service. Be sure to decide ahead of time whether you plan to save the top tier for your anniversary!

Not everyone likes cupcakes or smaller desserts and want to stick with a traditional cake. If you want the big cake, then keep it. Talk to your caterer and see if they can cut it for you. They frequently do this. If that is not an option, then ask an older aunt who has experience. I wouldn't ask a bridesmaid. Keep in mind that for a wedding cake, the slices are tiny. Picture your average birthday cake slice. A wedding cake slice is that divided into 3 pieces.

As the bride, while it's a sweet gesture to pass out cake per the article, they don't expect you to cut it yourself and many of those tips aren't practical in real life. Unless the caterer allows someone to cut it for you and you negotiate with them how to work around the cutting fee, it's something unnecessary that they don't budge on because it's part of the 'wedding package' that costs more. If it was a birthday they would charge you a cutting fee for the cake, but brides "don't know any better" by their logic. Talk to your caterer.
There are standard wedding cake cutting diagrams on Pinterest you can print off. Basically 1×2 inches. Bigger slices require a bigger cake.
