How to cut a wedding cake

FutureMrsB, on February 21, 2019 at 9:50 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 22

I am trying to figure how to go about the cake cutting. Of course we are going to cut the first piece.. but what about after that? Cutting the rest for the guests? I believe the venue is going to charge us $350 for them to cut the cake.. which I think is really expensive.. (seeing as I am paying $500 for the DOC)... I have read a tip about the bride and groom cutting the cake and serving the guests as a way of saying hi and thanking them for coming but honestly I dont think I want to cut 120 pieces lol... I was thinking another option would be to have the bridesmaids cut it?

Does any one have any other options or advice on how to handle this?

Thanks in advance! Smiley smile

Dont go with a giant cake for everyone else. We just did something small and decorated for us to cut and eat and then we're doing different flavored cupcakes for guests. That way we dont have to worry about a cake cutting fee and guests can come and grab one as they see fit. And an added bonus is they can choose a flavor that suits them.

People charge a cake cutting fee because it's tedious. Don't ask your bridesmaids to do it, especially not for free. Is your catering through your venue? If not, ask your caterer what the cutting fee would be. If you're not entirely set on a big tiered cake, you could consider cupcakes.

I'm also doing a small cake for us to cut and cupcakes for our guests. I'm doing a small grooms cake as well though which would need cut. A friend of mine volunteered herself to be the cake cutter as soon as we were engaged. Maybe someone will volunteer - I wouldn't assign someone else to do it.

Same, we're doing a small 2 tier cake and an assortment of other desserts. The 2 tier is mostly for cutting purposes and for us to eat and be able to take some with us for the weekend - mini moon - but our caterer said they'd graciously slice and serve pieces if we'd want for free.

Ask the bridesmaids and groomsmen if they would mind cutting. Get enough knives and plates ready and it should be over quickly.

Unless your wedding party has extensive knowledge on how to cut a tiered cake, I wouldn’t go that route. There’s actually a very specific way to cut cakes in order to make sure you get enough slices out of it. I would either pay the fee or consider a different dessert like cupcakes.

That is odd and crazy expensive what your venue is trying to charge...in my opinion! Our caterer is going to cut & serve our cake. However, in your situation I might suggest having a small bride & groom cake to cut for the cake cutting tradition, and serving your guests cupcakes so no one has to cut it. You could ask your bridal party if they would mind, but that may be pushing it. I'm sure they don't want to cut 120 pieces of cake either, lol. If you already have your big cake bought / planned, then you could ask your DOC how much extra she would charge to cut the cake. If you go the route of big cake to cut and serve, I'd definitely have some sort of paid vendor doing it so your guests or bridal party aren't burdened with the task. OR pay a teenage relative $50 to do it....they love the opportunity to earn extra cash.

I wonder if your cake person would change now to something else since the money is paid and you’re still using them? 5 weeks before should be enough time to change? Doesn’t hurt to ask..
our place charges $100 to cut cake so we went with cupcakes for the guest and a pretty cake for us to cut into

We are also going with a small cake to cut and cupcakes for our guests to avoid the cake cutting fee. I also think that this is nice for those with allergies. I have a very good friend with a chocolate allergy and a few with gluten restrictions, so this will help to ensure that everyone can have something.

I used to work as a catering server and have cut many wedding cakes. It's not a job for amateurs, especially ones who have been voluntold. Please don't ask your bridesmaids/friends/family to do it.

Ask your venue, your baker, your DOC, and/or your caterer for other options. And last resort, pay that fee and consider it money well spent.

I cut daughter's cake at the bridal shower, which was a single large 12" layer, the same type of cake and frosting as the wedding cake. It was a BIG job, and really messy (the cake was probably 7-8" high). I was cutting cake for most of the time daughter was opening shower gifts -- and I was only cutting about 25 pieces. I know it seems like a lot of money, but I would definitely pay to have your venue/catering staff do it. It is NOT a job for amateurs -- especially if the cake is multi-layer. I had a hard time with a single layer.

Yeah I sent an email to double check the pricing for the venue to cut it.. I think I am just going to pay the fee. I love the cake I picked and I dont want the headache of changing that at this point! Smiley smile

It doesn't hurt to ask if they could do it for free or at a discounted rate. I would say something like I love this venue and I am already over budget would you please consider cutting my cake for $100. Or Can you throw in the cake cutting.( I would probably ask that first) Lots of places charge by the amount of guest. One venue I looked at had a cake cutting fee of $3.25 pp!! That's crazy

I agree with this comment. My baker showed us a diagram of how the cake would be cut and it is a serious task! The cake cutter has to ensure they have enough slices for your count. For example, our cake is a three tiered cake. Apparently that serves up to 150 according to my baker. Umm okay... how?! Well she showed me the diagram and I said wow, good luck to the person responsible for that! lol...
