Cake cutting and serving issues

Private User, on October 7, 2014 at 7:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Long time lurker here just looking to see if anyone can help me with a bit of a dilemma when it comes to wedding cake.

Unlike most brides I see, my venue nor my caterer cut and serve wedding cakes. I know wedding cake servings are different than normal cake, and having tiers complicates things, so I don't really want to ask family members to do it. My venue recommended a company that provides wait staff (and has experience cutting wedding cakes). However, after emailing them, I come to find out they cost way more than our budget allows, and have a lot of minimums that have to be met. Both FH and I cannot for the life of us think of any solution for this problem. I figured the people of WW might think of something we overlooked! Thanks Smiley smile

A caterer near me sells pre-cut sheet cake for the wedding, I don't know if that would be helpful for you.

My venue will cut mine, included in price. If that was not the case, I have several cousins who have cut them before, and a couple of friends who know how. What is the big deal if family does it? I would be fine if mine did.

Hmmm.... maybe there's a youtube video that shows the best way to cut a wedding cake and you could get a close friend or family member to study up on the subject?

I've heard of people ordering a sheetcake to be cut for guests in the kitchen, while the tiered cake is mostly for show, with a small couples cake on top that you cut, and then the "cake" is taken away and the guests served the sheetcake, none the wiser.

It's quite time-consuming to cut a cake, so if you decide to go through with the DIY cutting, you should plan to cut the cake in advance of the dinner being served, IMO, unless you are having a very small wedding - it could take 20-30 min to cut and plate it, and most guests will be through their entree in 30 minutes, depending on how long serving takes.

Youtube usually has a video for everything - and here's one about cutting a 3 tier cake - and I see now why they don't want to do it, OMG... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33TSuB7kFQI

You do have the benefit of time... the only thing I can figure is, find a really wonderful friend or cousin or something, and order a plain 2-tiered cake, small, as a practice cake, watch a video or three, and give it a go.

Your caterer will not cut the cake...even at an added cost? I have never heard of such a thing.

Ask around and find a friend of a friend or two with waitressing experience to cut your cake and serve it. I don't know how much the service you checked with would charge, but I guarantee I could find a couple of people who would do it for $50 each. I would actually ask a waitress at one of our favorite local restaurants here.

I have two aunts who were planning on doing it, and our DOC was going to direct them. But then the caterer just did it, which is for the best if you've read any of my DOC stories... Smiley smile

Also, our cake person gave us a cutting guide on how to cut the cake, so you could get a couple of volunteers to study one of those?

That's strange... Yeah I would try and hire someone who's done it before, like someone who does banquet serving or something. See if your family/friends know anyone. Maybe you can talk the venue into doing it?

Im having sort of the same issue, not that my cateres wont cut it but they arent a coneventional caterer per say, im leaning toward doing what Megan suggested. getting a nice small cake for us to cut and do cupcakes for everyone else, it also may be more cost effective.

I was going to suggest the same as Megan. I loooove cake but at that point it might be easiest to do cupcakes. Or maybe have separated tiers to make it a little easier for family to cut (like in the picture). If you're already set on a look, then maybe try looking into other companies that don't have the crazy minimums and cost. I've found with some wedding related things the best way to solve a problem is to throw some money at it or change your vision to be simpler. So if you're set on a cake, you might have to bite the bullet and pay for a company to come in, otherwise you might want to change what you get.
