How to choose wedding colors?

Alys, on February 22, 2020 at 5:54 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 17
People keep asking me what are your wedding colors? I have no idea where to even begin choosing. I like most colors, it’s just in what combination. No idea what color I want bridesmaids to wear. Don’t have strong preferences about colors in general. How should I start? How to narrow options? I’m the kind of person who finds beauty in many things. I’ll look at a bunch of color schemes and find them all pretty. There are so many colors that it’s almost overwhelming. I tried choosing flowers first and I don’t really care about flowers or flower colors. I’m pretty flexible, just not the type of bride who has specific vision of what she wants. Help!

Does your FS have a favorite color? Mine specifically said he wanted one of two colors (hunter green or bright blue). I chose the hunter green and then decided on colors that would accent it well (gold, ivory, blush).

I’m the same way and I struggled picking wedding colors. Actually, I still haven’t 100% decided. 😅 Our wedding is in June 2021 so I have time to pick. I narrowed mine down based on season first. I really like fall colors, but we’re having a summer wedding, so it didn’t make sense. Then I ordered a bunch of color swatches from different places and some of the colors I thought I liked, I really didn’t. I then looked through photos from real weddings that used colors similar to the colors I was deciding between. I knew I wanted something unique and something that fit our theme. Doing those things, I’ve narrowed it down to two choices. My FH really isn’t into picking colors and just wants me to pick what I like the best, so he was no help for me. Haha. But your FS may have some good ideas if you haven’t already asked them. Hopefully this helps you at least a little. Good luck!

I'd pick your venue and dress first, then your colors.
We decided on blue and orange, to give a fall beachy feel. Also, the venue has a lot of powder blue accents. I ended up with a blush dress, and now I am trying to figure out how orange would work with that.

I agree! If you don't have a strong theme in mind (an era, favorite book or movie), the venue is a great start for color inspiration.

To keep with an authentic pirate theme and our wine cave reception venue, we went with golds, browns and oranges:

I already have venue and dress. Ceremony is outdoors, mountain top. Reception is indoors at the lodge, wood paneling on one wall. A patio on the side. I’ve done all the major pieces (ceremony site, reception venue, catering food and beverages, photographer, videographer). Now I’m on the more “detail” portion of planning. I’m good at the big picture stuff, not so much on the details, lol.

Thanks, I will def talk with him but I have doubts about his helpfulness. I can just see him saying, you have good taste, you choose.

Honestly my wedding was a year and a half ago and I still don’t know what my wedding colors were 😂 bridesmaids wore gray and centerpieces and tableware were more neutral. I just told my vendors I wanted a classic feel for everything!

My colors changed slightly throughout the planning process. I always knew I wanted a lot of gold and ivory. Once we found a venue and secured a date my vision changed a little due to season but we kept the gold and ivory portion. I thought we would have burgundy, but changed it to blush.

I didn’t have any colors in mind. I just looked at tons of pictures from other people’s weddings. I kept coming back to one picture and just knew that those would be our colors!

I would choose a color you like and then ask your fh what they like and see if it goes together

What season? I love the look of white flowers with green, that feels refreshing and summery.

I'd try to complement your natural landscape since it sounds like your venue is more outdoorsy and nature. Subdued earth tones or flower tones, rather than loud or bright jewel tones

We went with our favorite colors purple and gray. All of the different shades worked perfectly together.

You’re totally right!! It honestly doesn’t really matter what season it is, but I had to do SOMETHING to help me narrow down my options otherwise I was trying to pick from like 8 different color combinations and I loved them all. 😅 In my experience, nobody but me has cared what the colors are at all so I’m just picking what I love and and trying not to overthink it. Haha.

I would start with season and time of wedding. Then look at some different color combinations. Once you find a few you like, I would consider how those colors would look on your bridesmaids.
