How to ask for a deposit back?

FH and I put a deposit down on a place for next Sept and we've realized that we don't want a big wedding anymore and are doing a family only event, for a variety of reasons. Because it's so far in advance and it's a prime date we would like to ask for the deposit back on the venue, or perhaps see if we could purchase wine from the vendor instead of getting the cash back. Suggestions on how to do this with appropriate etiquette would be really helpful! Thanks!

    If you explain your situation and mention that you would like to put some of the deposit money towards purchasing wine from them instead, they should definitely understand! Especially if it's far ahead of time, because they'll have the opportunity to book with another couple.

    I'd look at the contract too. With my venue, if we wanted to, we were able to get our deposit back if we had a written request sent to them within 3 months of signing... after 3 months, the amount of the deposit given back goes down 50%, and after 6 months, we'd get no money back.     Check your contract. Every contract is different. For example our deposit is non-refundable, but in the event the wedding is canceled we can use it towards a different event or towards golfing/the pro shop/food etc (our venue is a golf club). If it truly is non-refundable I would write a letter or email to the event manager explaining the situation and see if there is anything that can be done. Good luck!

    I agree that checking your contract is a good idea, but even if it says "non-refundable", it doesn't hurt to give it is a shot. They may say no, but they may also say yes. Good luck!

    Ours is a refundable up to 30 days out. Then if they get the place rented we get our deposit back after that.

    I think you need ot call your venue. Tell them that your wedding plans have changed. You know you have a prime date. You'd like to release the date, and when they secure it for another wedding, have them please return your deposit.

    That is why they take deposits. It proteccts the vendor if you chance your mind or your plans. Don't be surprised if they don't even entertain the idea of giving it back. They are legally entitled to keep it.

    Part of your deposit covers the time and money it costs to secure a client; advertising, time with their sales team, correspondence back and forth, meetings. You need to look at your contract and then call them, the sooner the better.

    It seems like purchasing your wine from them would be a win win for all!

    I think that Meghan B. has a nice plan of action. Working with venues and knowing our catering policy, as well as the standard industry policy, it all depends on the Contract. Some venues really hold strong to their contract, while others may be more lenient as long as they can get that date re-booked. Most will choose to keep part of the deposit for the time and effort they have already put into it with you as their client. I like your idea of purchasing wine from them. Wish you the best of luck!

    Thanks everyone! I'll be calling them today. The contract says non-refundable, but perhaps we can talk with them about purchasing wine from them with the money if they re-book the venue. All of you are so sweet to offer advice! It's nice knowing there are so many wonderful people on here!

    Some places cannot sell wine for you to take elsewhere. Most state have a carry out license and a pouring license. And a lot of

    Places only hold one or the other.
